Huang Zitao (Chinese: 黄子韬; pinyin: Huáng Zitao), most commonly known as Tao (born May 2, 1993), is a Chinese singer and actor. He was active for three years as one of the rapper for the South Korea-Chinese boy group EXO and its Chinese-based unit, EXO-M. In the summer of 2015, Huang, under the newly adapted stage name "Z.Tao", made his solo debut with his digital mini-album T.A.O with 3 tracks.[1][2][3]

Early life & pre-debut

Huang Zitao was born in Qingdao, Shandong, China. Due to his mischievous nature as a child, his father placed him in martial arts training at the age of five. In late 2010, he reluctantly accompanied a friend to "MBC Star Audition"[4] which was hosting a global talent search and was scouted immediately by a representative from SM Entertainment. His brief trainee period spanned for a year and on December 27, 2011 he was formally introduced as the third member of EXO.[5] Huang made his first television debut at the SBS Gayo Daejeon event on December 29, 2011[6]

Career

2012 - 2015: EXO

Main article: Exo (band)

In 2013 during the months of August and September, Tao took part in filming for MBC's celebrity diving program Splash!.[7] After a run of four episodes, the show was cancelled due to a number of celebrities who were reportedly injured. The episodes aired from August 23, 2013 to September 13, 2013.[8]

In July 2014, Tao joined the Solomon Islands edition of SBS' Laws of the Jungle. He got injured in the foot during filming.[9][10] The episodes aired from September 12, 2014 to November 21, 2014.[11]

On June 27, 2015, Tao posted a two-word tweet: "Sorry. Grateful.". On August 24, Tao filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment to terminate his contract.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]

2015 - Present: Solo

In June 2015, Tao set up an official Chinese agency, Huang Z.TAO Studio.[26] On 23 July 2015, Tao made his first solo debut with a digital mini-album T.A.O.. Another self-titled album, Z.TAO, came out shortly after on August 19, 2015.

In October 2015, Anhui TV announced that Tao will be among the main cast of Law of the Jungle alongside Kim Byung-man. In November, Tao made his first reality-variety TV show appearance in "Charming Daddy" on SZTV,[27][28][29][30] a show where he experienced parenthood by raising children ages 5 or under, provided with a lump sum of money consisting of RMB600 (which is to be shared with 3 other families for one month).

Z.Tao took part in Jackie Chen's movie "Railroad Tigers" (Director: Ding Shen)[31] which is expected to be released in October 2016. In December 2015, Z.Tao was announced to be the male lead in the movie "Summer - 19 Years Old Portrait", which will start filming on January 10, 2016 in Taiwan and is based on a novel from Japanese mystery writer Soji Shimada.
