Tanmoy Bose (Bengali: তন্ময় বোস; born 23 August 1963) is an Indian percussionist and tabla player, besides being a musical producer, film actor and composer, who collaborated with Pandit Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar and Amjad Ali Khan, and created the musical group, Taaltantra in 2002.[1][2]
Early life and training
He was born and raised in Kolkata, and studied at the South Point High School and subsequently graduated from the Scottish Church College.[3] He received his musical education at the early age of seven and started learning vocal music from Pandit Maharaj Baneejee and harmonium from Pandit Mantu Banerjee subsequently learning tabla. His serious training in the traditional Guru Shishya Parampara started with Pandit Kanai Dutta, after the untimely death of his first guru Tanmoy became a GANDA BANDH shagird (disciple) of Pandit Shankar Ghosh.[4]
Tanmoy has performed extensively with some of the greatest musicians of Indian Classical Music all over the world like Ustad Munawar Ali Khan, Pandit V.G Jog, Ustad Imrat Khan, and many others.
This ace globe-trotting new age percussionist has been performing with the musical legend, Padma Bhushan Ustad Amjad Ali Khan from as early as his college days. Another great milestone in Tanmoy Bose’s life was achieved when Ravi Shankar invited him to play regularly with him around the world; he would spend almost half of the year traveling with the legendary maestro. Tanmoy has been an ardent researcher and composer.
His long tours abroad had given him opportunities to interact and play with musicians, composers, choreographers and the like he put to very good use his rich experience acquired hereby and created Beyond Borders, Chaturang Moksh, Taalyagna etc., based on the virtues of Indian Rhythm and Dance nuances. In 2002 his world music project Taaltantra - showcasing familiar sounds through unfamiliar mediums, cross cultural rhythm and devices won the hearts of connoisseurs and critics alike. He is acknowledged as one of the foremost musicians to have started the movement of initiating folk songs and tribal drumming into band format. Designing a musical filigree between traditional Folk and Indian Classical along with time less Jazz and South American drumming.

- Veshtantra
An effort first time of its kind being staged in Kolkata. Vesh Tantra — where timeless Raga’s pulsating rhythm and aesthetic fashion wear comes full circle. The unique feature of this evening lies within the combination of fashion and Ragas depicting the colour of the sky during different parts of the day. Our lives revolve throughout the day in various moods at various points of time. Likewise, nature, atmosphere and the Heaven above too change as the day grows older. This unique effort combines the colours of the sky epitomized by moods of the ragas which are typical of the various hours of the day. It is of common knowledge that we wear dresses of various colours to suit the times of the day- hence the unique bridge between fashion and music Vesh Tantra. There is an old maxim- The apparel oft proclaims the man. Each Raga may be typified by certain hues and tints – likewise colours in our dresses depict the moods and emotions of the Ragas and bring out the different persona of those wearing the dresses.
- Swataantra
Swataantra, as the word defined itself, is an independent and fresh idiom in music that sets a platform for tabla maestro Tanmoy Bose’s concept of "guitar" and "percussion" ensemble. Guitars, in different forms, prevalent today, with the likes of the electric tenor guitar, to the slide guitar, to the contra bass guitar finds centre stage along with Tanmoy Bose himself on tabla, and other percussion. This project stands out with the emphasis being laid on the cross talk between essentially the guitars themselves, on the conversations between the guitars and percussion. The project is purely instrumental, and mutates to the world – fusion- jazz genre by marrying phrases and dialogues of some of the most complex yet heart churning improvisational music forms like Hindustani, Carnatic classical and Jazz. The project also gives out the scope of featuring national and international musicians from time to time.
- Sound of soil
Darker than the lumber room of the Freudian mind, Deeper than the deepest thunder... Yet, sweeter than the cooing nightingale is a sound... Ever heard of it? Yes, it’s the sound of the soil. You think only you can talk? Think again... Silent voices... voices of the raindrops nestling on the leaves of the Amazonian rain forest, the endless babble of a breathless river, the murmur of the broken wind... sand, water, breeze, the voice is all over, all around. Put your ears close to the earth... you’ll hear the soil’s heart beat in all... The sound of the soil is the quintessence of existence... "Nada"... "Nada Brahmam"... the ‘Param Braham’. The soil is who you’re. It is from where you came, and it is where we will go. But only a few chosen can hear this sound. The evening of 16 September is an echo of that voice. It’s an evening where distance, time loose sense. An evening of enchantment devoted to that one rhythm... the rhythm of the heart and soul. The rhythm of the ragas of the musician, the bells of the dancer, the words of the poet... The evening begins with an invocation of that ‘Sound of the soil’... The light of the lamp, the holy stotras and mantras, the mudras of the dancer shall evoke the Goddess of the Soil from whom we’re born. The journey moves on with the magic of music... the north and the south, Hindusthani and Carnatic coming close to each other to show it’s the same soil we’re born from and divisions are but man-made. The mystic Sufi nostalgia of Baul & Fakirs singers will tell the story of the elements of the soil... as will the clashing of the swords of Kalaripayattu speak of the vigour and strength with which Mother Earth holds us all. The giddy strains of Manipur Khol players in between and the heady beats of Dhak at the end of the show will make us realize how different yet how similar can the understanding of the same soil be, and the words of the poet shall thread all these strains together showing the eternal quality of this voice... The Sound of the soil... one which connects the hearts beyond distance.
- Baul and Beyond
Come along with me experiencing the music of Baul 'n' Beyond! A communion of Jazz, Indian Classical Music, various indigenous drums and percussion along with the timeless lyrics of the great Sufi Saint Lalan Fakir is going to give you a high worth experiencing. This is my humble effort to showcase the best of world music. The extended length of each track is a deliberate effort to create an environment of utmost listening pleasure. The interweaving of instruments and voice is my interpretation of pure music. It is for you to decide and endorse my dear listeners my version of World Music.
- Mahabharata
Mahabharata revisited is a Contemporary representation of the epic where it comes alive in the perfect blend of music, fashion and dance. Unlike a dance recital or a fashion show, here the characters come alive as an admixture of dance movements that also flaunt designer clothes and jewellery as a part of the choreography. The music is a heady dosage of Timeless Indian Classical flavour that comes alive under the magic wand of director Pt. Tanmoy Bose. Thus Timeless Indian Classical music seamlessly merges with choreographed movements with fashionable attire and jewellery, form, a never-seen-before experience.
Be prepared to be pleasantly surprised by the modern audio-visual interpretation of the episodes of Kach-Debjani, Karna-Kunti, Draupadi, Shakuntala, Gandhari, Brihannala and Hirimba. The entire presentation is conceived and designed by Pt. Tanmoy Bose
- Rock Qawali
The genre is a crossroad of Sufi, Folk, Jazz and Indian Classical Music performed by the music maestro and new age percussionist Tanmoy Bose. His love for rhythm and his inseparable quest for life and music have led him to explore and master several genres of Indian and International music. Rock Qawwali is yet another instance of his musical genius that transcends the borders of classical and non-classical music and builds a bridge between the various genres.
