Girls' Generation-TTS (Hangul: 소녀시대-태티서, also known as TTS, TaeTiSeo, or Girls' Generation-TaeTiSeo) is a subgroup of South Korean girl group Girls' Generation, formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2012. It is composed of three Girls' Generation members: Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun.[1] The group released their debut album, Twinkle, in 2012. Their second studio album, Holler, was released in 2014. 'Holler' was followed up in December 2015 with a Christmas EP entitled'Dear Santa'.

History

2012–13: Formation and Twinkle

On April 19, 2012, S.M. Entertainment officially announced the formation of the subgroup, stating in their official press release that the intention was to "grab the attention of fans with all aspects of music, performance, and fashion styles." It also hinted at the possibility of other future subgroups, elaborating, "the members of the unit [are rotated] according to the [unique] music and concept of each new subgroup album."[1]

The name "TaeTiSeo" or "TTS", is made up of the first syllables of Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun.[2]

Compared to the 9, now 8-membered Girls' Generation, TTS's main focus is on each member's vocal ability while the original group places more emphasis on the overall songs and uniform group performances.[3]

The single "Twinkle" was released on iTunes worldwide on April 29, together with its music video on April 30, attaining over 10 million hits on YouTube within its first week. As of August 2014, the music video has more than 50 million views.[4] The mini-album, with the same name, Twinkle, was released digitally on April 30[5] and physically on 2 May. on 3 May, TTS began their album promotions on various music shows.

They became the first subgroup to achieve a "triple crown" on South Korean music shows, reigning in the No. 1 spot for three weeks in a row.[6][7] At the time, Twinkle was the highest charting album ever by a Korean artist on U.S. iTunes[8] and Billboard charts, reaching 126 on Billboard 200[9] (the record has since been broken).[10] The title song has 2,520,485 digital downloads in South Korea as of July 2014,[11] and the album has sold over 144,000 copies in South Korea, as well as a further 28,000 copies abroad.[12]

During the same year, the group also participated in the SMTown Live World Tour III where they performed "Twinkle", as well as a special performance of Usher's "DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love" with EXO members.[13]

2014–present: Holler, reality show and Dear Santa

After performing at the 2014 Blue One Dream Festival in July,[14] the group released their second mini-album, Holler, digitally on September 16 and physically on September 18.[15][16] The album debuted as number 1 on music charts in South Korea,[17] several other Asian countries and on[18] the Billboard World Albums. This made TTS the third Korean artist, and the first female artist to have more than one "Number 1" on this chart. They previously achieved the number 1 spot, two years back, with their debut release, Twinkle.[19]

During an interview with Billboard, the three singers shared, "This album was really personal for us and it was fun...to put out a much more raw side of our music...the music we put together has so much more layers, so much more depth to it in terms of sound, choruses or harmonizing together....Our main goal was to not be visually entertaining, but be vocally entertaining." They also revealed that Seohyun wrote the lyrics to one of the songs, "Only U",[20] while Tiffany served as the visual director to the concept of "Holler" music video.[21][22]

During the promotions, the three singers were featured in the reality show The TaeTiSeo. The show took on the personal side of Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun,[23] revealing how they live their normal everyday lives and what they do in their free time.[23][24] Some footage of the album preparation was also shown.

On November 1, a music industry official stated that TaeTiSeo is working towards releasing a new winter single in the first week of December.[25] On November 23, SM Entertainment confirmed that the group is set to drop a new winter-themed album in December.[26]

On November 24, Taeyeon, Tiffany & Seohyun revealed the first Christmas concept teaser image for their upcoming Christmas album. The group is planning on releasing their Christmas special album "Dear Santa" on December 4, and the promotions will begin on that same day, starting with KBS's 'Music Bank,' then MBC's 'Show! Music Core' on December 5 and SBS's 'Inkigayo' on December 6.[27][28] On November 25, Taeyeon's individual teaser image, as well as a second group picture was revealed.[29] On November 27, Tiffany's individual teaser image was posted.[28] On November 27, Seohyun's individual teaser image was released.[30]

On November 28, a series of group and individual teaser images showing a second concept were revealed.[31][32] On November 29, SM Entertainment announced that on November 30 at 7 p.m. (KST), the teaser for the music video will be released through TaeTiSeo’s official website and SMTown's YouTube Channel, on December 3 at 8 pm. KST, they will hold a showcase "X-Mas Special – Dear Santa" at the SMTown Theater in COEX, in Seoul.[33]

On November 30, the teaser music video is released, showing each member of TaeTiSeo dressed in a deep red ball gown, with Seohyun playing the piano, and Taeyeon and Tiffany standing and singing.[34][35] On December 1, individual teaser image of a third concept as well as the EP's full tracklist were posted.[36] On December 2, The group unveiled a second video teaser for "Dear Santa",[37] as well as a group picture of a fourth concept.[38] On December 3, the full M/V for "Dear Santa" was posted on SM Entertainment's official YouTube channel.[39] The group also recorded an English version of "Dear Santa" for their international fans.

On November 29, a MAMA representative revealed, TaeTiSeo and labelmates Red Velvet have confirmed their participation at the 2015 MAMA, which will be held in Hong Kong AWE on December 2.[40] On November 30, it was revealed that TaeTiSeo and labelmates EXO will donate a part of the profits from their Christmas albums to a charity called SMile for U, a campaign held between SM Entertainment and UNICEF.[41]
