tado° GmbH is a German technology company headquartered in Munich (Germany) and the European market leader in intelligent home climate solutions. tado° manufactures smart thermostats and smart air conditioning controls.
History
tado° was founded in 2011 by Johannes Schwarz, Christian Deilmann, and Valentin Sawadski.[2] The company name is derived from the Japanese salutation “tadaima“ (“I’m back home“) and “okaeri“ (“Welcome back“).[3] The company's first product, tado° Heating, was launched in November 2012 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and in 2013 in the United Kingdom.[4]
In the beginning of 2014 tado° Cooling underwent a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.[5][6]
In July 2014, tado° closed a €10m ($13.6m) funding round from, among others, Target Partners and Shortcut Ventures.[7]
The company's second product, tado° Smart AC Control, for intelligent cooling was launched in Europe and the U.S. in June 2015. The launch event took place in New York City.[8]
Products
tado° is European market leader for smart thermostats.[9]
Besides reducing energy consumption and increasing savings the thermostat also increases the residents' overall comfort.[10] tado° detects the absence or presence of residents via smartphone and then adjusts the heating automatically. Weather forecasts and the heating properties of a home such as insulation are considered.[11]
One challenge for tado° is the lack of a heterogeneous heating landscape in Europe and the related integration and support of their respective control interfaces. Currently more than 5,000 different heating systems can be controlled by tado° Heating.[12][13][14]
In June 2015 tado° launched its second product, the Smart AC Control. It is NOT a Thermostat. It turns any air conditioning unit into a smarter device.[15] tado° Smart AC Control uses a smartphone's location to be able to determine if the resident is at home or not and automatically turns the AC on or off. The air conditioner can also be manually operated via the Smart AC Control using the tado° App.[16] However, Tado is unable to factor the room temperature into the On/Off decision, therefore it turns the AC on even if the room does not need any AC. Further, if the room temperature is greater than the setpoint, Tado does not increase fan speed, or do anything at all to assist with the comfort level. If the room temperature is lower than the setpoint, Tado does not lower fan speed or give the user any option to turn the AC off via rules. Tado operates as an On/Off controller, based on time of day, and the geolocation of a smartphone, it should not be compared with a Nest. IFTTT is offered, but does not have room temperature as a decision factor, so there isn't any reasonable method to implement a simple Thermostat via IFTTT.
