The synlab Group provides laboratory services in Europe for human and veterinary medicine as well as environmental analysis. With its head office in Augsburg/Germany, the company has branches in Germany and in 19 other countries in Europe as well as in Turkey, Saudi-Arabia and Dubai. The synlab network comprises around 300 facilities, including 175 full-service laboratories, reference laboratories, smaller routine laboratories and hospital laboratories. The Group has around 7,000 employees and generated revenues of approx. EUR 700 million in 2013.[1][2][3]
Activities
The company provides laboratory analyses for human and veterinary medicine as well as for environmental applications. The synlab laboratories examine some 1 million samples (e.g. urine, blood, tissue, soil, drinking water) each day on the basis of around 5,000 different test parameters. These are joined by approximately 60 new parameters each year.
Medical practices are able to make use of hygiene and quality management services, a training academy, support with practice marketing as well as patient information on health-related matters.[4] The company assists hospitals with infection prevention and hygiene management. For this purpose, synlab holds a majority stake in the Hygiene Consulting Center in Freiburg.[5] This is supplemented with transfusion and blood bank management, quality management consulting and laboratory diagnostics systems (point of care testing).
Management
The CEO of the synlab Group is laboratory medicine specialist Dr. med. Bartl Wimmer. The other members of the company's management are Alexander Hoffmann and Markus Stötter.
History
synlab acquired MVZ Leverkusen Group in 2010, thus substantially improving its market position in North Rhine-Westphalia.[6] The MVZ Leverkusen Group has around 1,000 employees and generates revenues of EUR 80 million per year. In 2011, synlab Suisse acquired one of the largest private laboratories in the Canton of Tessin, Bioanalitico in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland.[7] This was followed in the same year by the takeover of Prague-based laboratory Chambon. Chambon, today named synlab Genetics, is one of two commercial genetics laboratories in the Czech Republic and primarily active in the areas of hematology and oncology. According to its management, the synlab Group wants to develop into the leading diagnostics group in Europe.[8]
Owners
The majority shareholder of synlab Holding GmbH is the private equity company BC Partners.[9] In addition, there are roughly 30 other owners, mainly managers and laboratory doctors, holding roughly 28 percent of the company's capital.
