Syed Hamid Hussain (Urdu: سید حامد حسین) was a Pakistani doctor and chemistry professor who died in 2016 Bacha Khan university massacre.[4][3]

Life

Hamid Hussain had a PhD degree in Chemistry from the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom. He was a assistant professor at Bacha Khan University and was working there for three years. Hamid was married and had two children, a daughter and a son.[5]

Death

On 20 January 2016 at 9:30 AM, four TTP militants attacked Bacha Khan University in Charsadda District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Hamid heard the gunshots in the classroom and told the students not to leave the building. He fought back the militants with a 9mm pistol, saving lives of some students while sacrificing his own life.[6][7] A student named Zahoor Ahmed told that he was killed by firing of two militants. “He was holding a pistol in his hand. Then I saw a bullet hit him. I saw two militants were firing. I ran inside and then managed to flee by jumping over the back wall.” said Ahmed.[1] The attack left 21 dead including security guards, students and assistant professor, Hamid Hussain. The Facebook page of Bacha Khan University also confirmed the death of Hamid Hussain. He was laid to rest in Swabi District.[8]

Reaction

The CM of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khan Khattak visited Hamid's house in Swabi on 22 January 2016. His family started protesting against him and asked Khattak to resign from the office.[9] Many people paid tribute to Hamid Hussain through television and social media. PTI chairman Imran Khan tweeted: “The whole nation salutes our hero Prof Hamid who was martyred, pistol in hand, defending the students at Bacha Khan University.”[10][11]
