Dr. Swapan Purkait (Bengali: স্বপন পুরকাইত) is the founder Director of Nettech.[1][2] He is a first generation entrepreneur. Dr. Purkait is a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from XIMB. He has done his Ph.D. on Information Security from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He specializes in Information Security Management Systems, Cyber Crime Investigation and Ethical Hacking. He is also associated with BSI Group.[3] and carried out IRCA accredited Lead Auditor and Lead Implementer programs for BSI across India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Middle East and Nigeria. Dr. Purkait has worked with clients across sectors on Information Security.[4] He is a popular speaker among corporate[5] & across college campuses,[6][7][8][9][10] and considered a thought leader on Information Security.[11]

Early life and education

Swapan Purkait was born in a Bengali family in Kolkata, West Bengal. He came from a poor background and started working at an early age to supplement his family's income. He passed Madhyamik (10th standard) (Bengali: মাধ্যমিক) and Uchha Madhyamik (12th Board)(Bengali: উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক) from Tirthapati Institution in Kolkata. Purkait earned a Bachelor of Commerce[12] degree from Calcutta University's Heramba Chandra College, popularly known as South City (Day) in Kolkata. He went on to do a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar.

He then went on to complete his Ph.D. on Information Security from the Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur with thesis title A Study of Phishing Attacks and Effectiveness of the Countermeasures[13] under the supervision of Dr. Sadhan K. De.[14]

Professional career

In 1996 Purkait bagan his career as a Sales officer for India's first email company ICNET Ltd.[15] He founded Nettech in 2002, an Information Technology consulting firm specializing in the area of computer networking in the Linux environment.[16][17] As of May 2015, he has trained more than 14000 professionals and conducted more than 140 training programs on Network Management[18] in various premier academic institutions in India.[19] The list of Institutions includes Indian Institute of Management Calcutta,.[20] Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur,[21] Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur,[22][23] XLRI Jamshedpur, [24] Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad,[25][26] Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar,[27][28] Pondicherry University,[29] Sikkim Manipal University,[30][31] Manipal Institute of Technology[32] and many more.

Lead Auditor & Tutor

Dr. Purkait is a BSI Lead Auditor & tutor[3] for ISO/IEC 27001(ISMS), ISO/IEC 22301(BCMS) & ISO 20000(ITSMS). He is also a IRCA-certificated Principal Auditor for ISMS, and Provisional Auditor for ITSMS and BCMS.[33]

In 1993, Purkait received the Rashtrapati Scout Award, the highest Scout award of The Bharat Scouts and Guides,[37] the award was presented by Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma, the President of India at a special investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
