Suvir Misra,(pronunciation:[s̪u ʋiːr miɕrə] सुवीर मिश्र) is an Indian musician, vocalist, musicologist, and is an expert in Rudra Veena, Saraswati Veena, Surbahar, Sitar and Tabla. He is unique in being a left handed artist who has mastered all the three veenas of the Indian classical music - the Rudra Veena, the Saraswati Veena and the Surbahar. He is the inventor of Misr Veena. [1]
Early life
Suvir Misra was born in Harda, Madhya Pradesh and belongs to a family of musicians. He has studied at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. He started his journey into music at the age of 12. [2]
Personal life
He joined Civil Services of India in 1993, and currently is working as a Joint Commissioner, Customs and Central Excise, New Delhi [2]
Career
Suvir started learning Tabla, Sitar and Khayal form of music an early age of 12. He took his training on the rudra veena from Zia Fariduddin Dagar and simultaneously studied dhruapd vocal from Nirmalya Dey. [3]He took guidance in Gwalior Khayal Gayaki from K.N.Ienger and learnt Sitar from N.R.Rama Rao. He studied Tabla from Bandu Khan of Ajarada Gharana. Suvir Misra found inspiration in Veena from S. Balchandar of the Karnatic tradition
Being dissatisfied with the older themes of the classical music, Suvir Mistra started experimenting in the contemporary themes. He believes that older themes have lesser importance to the modern Indian living and to popularize the classical music, contemporary themes should be used. For this he introduced modern Hindi mukta chhanda poetry within Dhrupad composition structure, and also used newer themes in Hindi literature instead of traditional Awadhi language or Braj Bhasha.[1]
Suvir Misra is a proficient Rudra Veena player and is also an expert in the art of making Rudra veena. [4]Suvir has performed on various platforms within India.[5]

- His efforts have brought back Karnatic Saraswathi Veena into the mainstream Hindustani classical music scene. [6]
- He has also developed a unique fingering style to play fast taans of Khayal.
- He is the inventor of Misr Veena.
- Suvir Misra has been trying to bring extinct Veenas, like Jantari, Kinnari etc, back to life.
Musical style
Suvir prefer to play Rudra Veena, Saraswati Veena, Surbahar in the Gayaki Ang (Vocal Style). This style integrates all the subtle characteristics of the human voice into the performance. [7][8]
