Doraemon (born on 3 September, 2112, Virgo) is the titular character of the series. He is a cat-like robot created by Nobita from the future and sent to the Matsushiba Robot Factory (マツシバロボット工場) as blueprint, and is sent back in time by Sewashi (Nobita's grandson) to aid Nobita, since Sewashi learned from his parents that Nobita suffered much in his life and wanted to help him. Doraemon possesses a fourth-dimensional pocket from which he can acquire various kinds of futuristic tools, gadgets, and playthings from a future department store. He also has the tendency to panic during emergencies, characterized by him frantically trying to pull out a very much-needed tool from his pocket, only to produce a huge assortment of unrelated household items and unwanted gadgets. Still, Doraemon is very friendly and intelligent, not to mention long-suffering because of Nobita's antics. Since Sewashi sent Doraemon to the past, Doraemon has been living as the unofficial fourth member of Nobita's family and acts like a second son to Nobita's parents, since despite being a robot, he requires basic needs for a person, such as eating, and also sleeps in the closet of Nobita's bedroom.
Doraemon's physical appearance changed as the manga progressed. At first, he was predominantly blue, with a blue tail, a white stomach, and flesh-coloured hands and feet. He also stooped, and had a body much larger than his head. In later issues, he sported a smaller body, white hands and feet, and a red tail — the appearance most identify him with today. In "The Doraemons" story arc (and the 2112: The Birth of Doraemon short film), it is revealed that Doraemon's original paint color was yellow. After getting his ears gnawed off by a robot mouse at Sewashi's house, he slipped into depression on top of a tower, where he erroneously drank a potion labeled "sadness". As he wept, the yellow color washed off and his voice changed due to the potion. As a result, he developed a morbid fear of mice despite being a robotic cat, and he is now suffering from musophobia.
Doraemon weighs 129.3 kg (285 lb) and measures at 129.3 cm (4 ft 3 in) tall. He is able to run at 129.3 km/h (80.3 mph) when scared and jump 129.3 cm (4.242 ft) when threatened. His maximum power is 96.4 kW (129.3 bhp). His waist, head, and chest circumference are all 129.3 cm. His feet are 129.3 mm in diameter. One can turn Doraemon off by pulling his balloon tail. Doraemon is considered a substandard product because many of his robotic features (i.e. radar whiskers and cat-calling bell) malfunctioned after production due to an accident in the factory while he was being built. Due to this malfunction, Doraemon did not do well at the robot's school and during the final presentation show, he performed badly and nobody wanted to hire him, until baby Sewashi pushed the button. His parents were a bit reluctant, but since Sewashi liked him, they hired Doraemon, and he took care of him until Sewashi himself sent him to the past to take care of Nobita. Despite this, Doraemon shows a lot of intelligence and common sense. Whenever he hangs out with his friend Mii-Chan (a cute street cat), he calls it 'important and busy work' as excuses for not doing work when Nobita or his mother ask him to do something when he will be going out with Mii.
Doraemon's favourite food is dorayaki (どら焼き) (known as "fudgy pudgy pie" in the English version of the manga, "yummy buns" in the English, and "dora-cakes/bean jam buns" in other versions), a Japanese treat filled with red bean paste. While it might explain the origin of his name, it was revealed in one of the manga chapters that his name originates from the Japanese word nora neko (のら猫) for "stray cat", and the -emon (衛門) ending which is part of traditional Japanese names, as seen also in, for example, Ishikawa Goemon.[1][2][3]
Nobita Nobi (野比 のび太 Nobi Nobita) / Noby Nobi (English Dub)
- Young: Voiced by: Yoshiko Ōta (1973), Noriko Ohara (1979-March 2005), Hiroko Maruyama (Stand-in for Ohara), Megumi Ōhara (April 2005-present) (Japanese), Johnny Yong Bosch (2014) (English)
- Teen: Voiced by: Makiko Ōmoto (2000), Mai Kadowaki (2005-2007)
- Adult: Voiced by: Kōzō Shioya (1984), Shingo Hiromori (1987-1990), Noriko Ohara (2000~2004), Tōru Ōkawa (2005), Hideyuki Hori (2006), Satoshi Tsumabuki (Stand by Me Doraemon)
Nobita Nobi (born on 7 August, Leo), named Noby Nobi in the English dub,[4] is the main protagonist in virtually most stories of the series. He is a fourth grader[5] (fifth grader in anime version) in Tokyo's Nerima Ward and the only child to his parents. He wears glasses, a red or yellow polo shirt with a white collar, and blue or black shorts. Nobita is usually foolish, uncoordinated, dimwitted, weak, frail, childish and bad at sports.
Nobita's typical day consists of arriving late to school, falling asleep during class, scoring zero (00%) (F's in the English dub ) on his tests, getting scolded by his teacher, being teased by his classmates Gian and Suneo, falling in the curbside rain gutters, having dogs running after him as he steps by mistake on the dog's tail, getting grounded by his mother as she receives complaints against Nobita for not completing his homework, and having a bad reputation among his friends except Shizuka, who remembers Nobita's kind heart and cares for him. He is also a coward who is scared by almost everything, particularly ghosts, and a cry-baby (a running gag in the show has Nobita crying and asking for Doraemon to bring out his gadgets, mostly at the beginning of the episode). He dislikes going on outdoor activities with his interest being taking an afternoon nap or reading comics, usually right after school, which could last up to midnight and thus he misses dinner as a result. In fact, sleeping and comic book reading are probably his only true hobbies; a story reveals that Nobita can fall asleep in three seconds just by closing his eyes, while in others he chooses sleeping over important events, such as watching the first sunrise on New Year's Day. The only thing stopping him from staying at home all the time, other than experimenting with Doraemon's gadgets, is Gian and Suneo bullying him to participate in baseball games or hearing criticisms from his parents and Doraemon to go out and play.
Despite the above flaws, Nobita is usually portrayed as being kind-hearted, emotional, honest, occasionally hard-working (like when he gets into a wager with his friends) and courageous. He has often risked his life to help save others or even entire civilizations in full-length stories. Though he is shown to be academically poor, the reason behind it is principally his laziness, and he has also secured good marks in multiple episodes, proving his credentials. Nobita can be very serious and responsible at times. Nobita is weak in almost every aspect but does have many upsides. For example, Nobita has excellent marksmanship which rivals (or even surpasses) Dora the Kid. He can also weave excellent string figures, is a great archer, and a fairly good comic book critic, owing to the huge amount of time he spends on reading them. He is also very creative when it comes to utilizing Doraemon's gadgets (in one episode, he had found a way to profitably use a gadget called 'the broadcasting mirror', for advertising, even when Doraemon himself couldn't think of any use for it).
In the original history where Doraemon does not interfere, Nobita would marry Jaiko - Gian's sister (although he only loves Shizuka), never find a good job, start his own business, and eventually go bankrupt. Despite everything, Doraemon succeeds on his mission of preventing all these from happening, as seen in several episodes in which they travel to the future. Nobita eventually marries Shizuka and becomes an officer in the Ministry of Environment.
Shizuka Minamoto (源 静香 Minamoto Shizuka) / Sue Morris (English Dub)
- Young: Voiced by: Masako Ebisu (1973), Michiko Nomura (1979-March 2005), Rei Sakuma (2000), Yumi Kakazu (2005-present) (Japanese), Cassandra Morris (2014) (English)
- Teen: Voiced by: Rei Sakuma (2000)
Shizuka (born on 8 May, Taurus), usually called Shizuka-chan (しずかちゃん) as a nickname, is a smart, kind, emotional and pretty girl, and Nobita's best friend. She does not shun Nobita due to the latter's failing grades, lazy disposition or constant failures; in fact she often tries to encourage him to do better, though she usually fails to convince him. Shizuka likes to take a bath several times a day, however, a running gag in the series is that Shizuka is often interrupted by Nobita's sudden appearance, usually due to misuse of Doraemon's gadgets such as the Anywhere Door, ending with Shizuka shouting "Go away, pervert!" to Nobita.
Her true passions are sweet potatoes, which she would rather keep to herself out of the knowledge of others, and the violin, in which her playing is as horrendous as Gian's singing. She is also known for taking piano lessons unwillingly due to her mother's wishes (as she loves violin more), which is sometimes a reason for declining to hang out with friends (but she plays piano very well than violin). Shizuka is an animal lover and keeps two pets at home: a dog, who is saved from succumbing to illness by Nobita and Doraemon in one story; and a canary which runs away on multiple occasions and causing Shizuka and Nobita to run around the city hunting her down.
Due to Doraemon's intervention, Shizuka will marry Nobita in the future. At present, she does not have any particular crush (other than on Nobita, whom she secretly likes very much), although she fancies some handsome idols on TV. Other than Nobita, Gian, and Suneo, Shizuka is also close to classmate and popular student Dekisugi which makes Nobita jealous; though they consider each other only as friends, Nobita often tries to prevent them from going together.
Shizuka's last name in the English Dub, Morris is also used from her voice actor name.
In the closed captioning of Doraemon’s Time Capsule, her Japanese name is retained while donating her diary to the capsule. It might be an error.
Takeshi "Gian" Goda (剛田 武 Gōda Takeshi) / Takeshi "Big G" Goda (English Dub)
- Young: Voiced by: Kaneta Kimotsuki (1973), Kazuya Tatekabe (1979-March 2005), Subaru Kimura (2005-present) (Japanese), Kaiji Tang (2014) (English)
- Teen: Voiced by: Kujira (2000)
Takeshi (born on 15 June, Gemini), usually known by the nickname "Gian" (ジャイアン Jaian) (known as "Big G" in the English version of the manga) from English word "Giant" due to his big size, is a strong and quick-tempered local bully who can fight at any time and with any kid he sees, especially Nobita. He also frequently steals other children's toys and books (especially Suneo's) under the pretext of "borrowing" them, unless the toy is damaged. He is known for his boastful confidence in his actually horrible singing voice, though he considers himself a great singer destined for stardom. To prove this, Gian sometimes "invites" others to attend his recitals and concerts, under the threat of beatings, which others would gladly avoid by listing various excuses or by hiding. His singing voice is so horrible that in a story in which Nobita and Doraemon try to mute it in a silent world, his writings of the song lyrics in a board end up having the same effect as when they hear them, and in some films, his singing is enhanced to become an effective weapon comparable to an explosion (as in 'Nobita's Great Adventure in the South Seas'). In some episodes when his voice is recorded and he hears it, he instantly denies it being his voice and threatens to beat up the person who sang his songs in a very bad way. Gian is also confident in cooking, but just like his singing, his hand-made food can be a nightmare for other people very easily.
However, Gian does not hesitate to help his friends when they are in real trouble. Throughout the series, particularly the films, he is often the one who voices the most concern and refuses to look away when there is a problem, an opposite of Suneo's cowardice. While he is described by others as daunting and intimidating, he is very sensitive and prone to crying when something touching happens, and he actually values his friends highly, a feeling which his friends sometimes reciprocate. Gian also has a soft spot for his younger sister, Jaiko, and usually tries to prevent her from trouble, even if she can perfectly handle her situation.
Suneo Honekawa (骨川 スネ夫 Honekawa Suneo) / Sneech (English Dub)
Voiced by: Shun Yashiro (1973), Kaneta Kimotsuki (1979- March 2005), Naoki Tatsuta (Stand-in for Kimotsuki), Tomokazu Seki (April 2005-present) (Japanese), Brian Beacock (2014) (English)
Suneo (born on 29 February, Pisces), is the fox-faced (inherited from his mother) rich child who loves to flaunt his material wealth before everyone especially Nobita. A lot of the stories start with Suneo showing off some new video game, toy or pet which evokes Nobita's envy. He is often seen with Gian, teasing Nobita. He sometimes despises Nobita and often makes fun of him, most often resulting in Nobita getting into trouble. He also often pushes Nobita aside with silly excuses while he invites Gian and Shizuka to his parties or resorts. However, he is actually one of Nobita's closest friends, who would often ask for his and Doraemon's help. In the films, Suneo is often the one most reluctant to take part in Nobita and Doraemon's adventures, and he also tries to face as little trouble as possible and go home, unless others convince him, making him somewhat a coward. He has an extensive knowledge of science, and is a talented artist and designer, besides being extremely cunning.
In some scenes, Suneo is seen as a narcissist who loves to stare at himself in the mirror while telling himself that he is the most handsome guy in the world. He is still a bed-wetter, despite being in the fourth/fifth grade. He considers this humiliating habit his secret weakness. His habit of bragging often lands him into trouble. Suneo is also very self-conscious about his height, being the shortest kid in his class. He likes steak and melon.
Dorami (ドラミ)
Voiced by: Keiko Yokozawa (1980-2005), Chiaki Fujimoto (2006-present) (Japanese), Wendee Lee (2014) (English)
Dorami-chan (born on 2 December 2114, Sagittarius) is Doraemon's younger sister. Like Doraemon before he developed a fear of mice, she is yellow-skinned and has ears that resemble a large red bow. She and Doraemon are siblings due to the fact that they shared half of the oil from a can. Dorami lives in the 22nd-century Tokyo with Sewashi. She sometimes visits Nobita with a time machine when Doraemon is "off-duty", to help Doraemon with something or to take care of Nobita when Doraemon has gone for his yearly health checkup. Dorami likes melonpan and is afraid of cockroaches like Nobita's mom. She is also shown to be a more advanced robot than Doraemon (Dorami is able to produce 10,000 horse power, in comparison to Doraemon's 129.3). Different from her malfunctioning brother, she is the smartest student during her school time, and has better skills in using gadgets. In a story, Nobita is intent on replacing Doraemon with Dorami due to her better skills; however, he quickly learns the fact that Dorami does not understand him as much as Doraemon does and will not tolerate his usual antics.
Dorami also has her own spin-off manga. In the manga series The Doraemons, she is the love interest of Dora-the-Kid, Doraemon's friendly rival and the one most similar to him. She was originally pink, but turned yellow after drinking a potion labeled "Jealousy".
Dorami never appeared in the 1973 anime.
Jaiko (ジャイ子) / Jaiko "Little G" Goda (English)
Voiced by: Yoshiko Ōta (1979), Kazuyo Aoki (1980-March 2005), Vanilla Yamazaki (April 2005-present) (Japanese), Minae Noji (2014) (English)
Jaiko is Gian's younger sister, and also the only child Gian treats well in the whole story, and Jaiko too loves her elder brother. In earlier stories, she had bad tempers when something did not go as she pleases, though she mellows down in later stories. According to Doraemon's Future Album, she would have been Nobita's wife in the future had Doraemon not intervened, and the marriage would have produced too many children, which is why her first appearance is earlier than Suneo and Gian in the series. Her name Jaiko is usually considered a nickname in the same vein as her brother; her given name is never revealed in the series.
As an aspiring manga artist, Jaiko goes by her pen name Christine Goda (クリスチーネ 剛田 Kurisuchīne Gōda), and sometimes submits her manga to publishing companies for prizes. She usually fails because her storytelling is still rough, although she has received much attention from editors. Sometimes when she almost decides to give up writing comic books after failing to get good ideas, Gian and his friends, after being requested and sometimes forced, cheer her up. Unlike Gian, she is kind, polite and good at studies. She and Moteo Mote are good friends, and he appreciates her cartoons and encourages her to write more. In the English dub, she is voiced by Minae Noji.
Jaiko never appeared in the 1973 anime and was presumably replaced by Botako.
Hidetoshi Dekisugi (出木杉 英才 Dekisugi Hidetoshi) / Ace Goody (English Dub)
- Young: Voiced by: Sumiko Shirakawa (1980~March 2005), Shihoko Hagino (TV Asahi Announcer, May 2005-) (Japanese), Spike Spencer (2014) (English)
- Adult: Voiced by: Shinya Ōtaki
Dekisugi ( born on June 21, Cancer ) is Nobita's classmate and friendly rival for Shizuka's affections and best friend with high relationship. He is very intelligent and has a photographic memory. Dekisugi is the perfect all-round student, getting the best grades in class with a 100 (A+'s in English Dub) and also being highly capable in sports. His name literally means "brilliant over-achiever", and his last name is a pun on dekisugiru, which means "over achieving". Owing to that Shizuka sometimes prefer the company of Dekisugi, who is more of her intellectual equal, Nobita often feels jealous and concocts bizarre schemes (helped by Doraemon's gadgets) to keep them apart. However, Dekisugi never shows bad tempers to Nobita and even willingly helps Nobita whenever he has philosophical or scientific questions. Dekisugi is polite, respectful, and will never argue with or fault anyone even in the most ridiculous of situations - instead he will always say something with a positive vibe to lighten the mood.
In the future, it is shown that in spite of Dekisugi's friendship with Shizuka, the latter will still marry Nobita while Dekisugi himself is wed to another girl. The Dekisugi family will also be a very close associate of the Nobi family with the families' children being friends with each other, although Nobita mistakes their relationship at first.
Dekisugi never appeared in the 1973 anime, this was possibly because the Fujiko Fujio duo were still working on the manga at that time and Dekisugi was not added until later in the manga.
Mini-Doras (ミニドラ[たち])
Voiced by: Chie Kitagawa (1990), Rei Sakuma (1994~March 2005), Tomato Akai (October 2005~) (Japanese), Cristina Valenzuela (2014) (English)
Mini-Doras are one of the gadgets of Doraemon. They are mini versions of Doraemon each with a different color variation such as red, green and yellow variations. They can think and feel for themselves, and communicate with Doraemon through the "Mini-Dora" language (consisting of words like Dorara and speaking with gibberish accent). They act as helpers for all sorts of tasks, such as repairing the internal mechanism of Doraemon.
In Go to the Doctor, Doraemon!, a red Mini-Dora shocks Nobita with a small Anywhere Door, making Nobita seeing it was the red Mini-Dora who made it appear as they also have pockets like Doraemon. The Mini-Dora tries to defend Nobita and help him have a chance to deactivate the red button of instant reboot.
Teacher (先生 Sensei) / Mr. S (English Dub)
Voiced by: Osamu Katō→Masashi Amenomori (1973), Ritsuo Sawa (1979), Osamu Katō→Kazuhiko Inoue (1980-September 1981), Ryōichi Tanaka (October 1981-March 2005), Wataru Takagi (April 2005-) (Japanese), Keith Silverstein (2014, English) (English)
Nobita's teacher is a strict unnamed taskmaster at Nobita's school who often scolds Nobita seriously for not completing his homework and still getting zero marks on his tests all the time, though he also sometimes tries to encourage him, through kindness, to study and get good marks. The punishments on Nobita range from standing in the hallway to sweeping the classroom alone after school. While the teacher is impressed by Dekisugi's progress, Suneo tends to fool the teacher with his convincing acts of lying and using superstitions. Nobita's teacher often pays unexpected visits to the Nobi’s in order to inform Tamako Nobi about Nobita’s recent exam results and his academic position. He also usually sees Nobita on the streets and often cheers him on to study hard to get higher scores during exams. Nobita's feelings towards him are varied, ranging from fear to respect and admiration.
His real name is unknown, although he appears in a majority of the episodes, and he is only referred to as "Sensei" (one of the names for a teacher in Japanese). In the NTV anime, his name is given as Ganari (我成). In the TV Asahi version, he was once named Eiichiro Senjou (先生 えいいちろう Senjō Eiichirō), whose family name happens to mean "teacher" but is read differently. In the English dub, he is called Mr. S (as the S in his name in the English Dub probably stands for "sensei").
Nobi/Kataoka family
- Tamako Nobi (野比 玉子 Nobi Tamako) / Tammy Nobi
- Voiced by: Noriko Ohara (1973), Sachiko Chijimatsu (1979-March 2005), Kotono Mitsuishi (April 2005-) (Japanese), Mari Devon (2014) (English)
- Young Voiced by: Tomoko Kawakami
- Tamako Nobi (born on 16 February) is Nobita's bespectacled, stay-at-home mother and one of the main protagonists in short stories, and the one Nobita inherits his appearance from. She can be very strict where she is often seen scolding Nobita for his actions, beating him, grounding him, or sending him out of the house (a typical Japanese household punishment used by parents). Several episodes involve Nobita trying to avoid his mother’s scolding by using Doraemon’s gadgets. Despite her disappointment with Nobita's lazy attitude and academic failures (even when her house is occasionally visited by Nobita's teacher for his progress in school), she is actually a good mother and cares about her son deeply. Her maiden last name is revealed to be Kataoka (片岡). She has a tendency of stopping Nobita from going out to play and forcing him to study. However, on cold weather days, she always urges Nobita to go out and play, to Nobita's intense displeasure. Her anxiety about the high household expenses is a recurring feature. In a couple of episodes where Nobita sees her in the past, it is revealed that she was rebellious even as a girl. She has an extreme dislike of animals and would always reject requests for any pet Nobita wants; this becomes a plot point in some of the films and stories where Nobita has to take in stray animals secretly. However, in one story, her initial dislike of a cat turns her into adoring it so much that she becomes depressed when the cat's owner wants it back. In Mother vs. Rich Mother battle, she eats the Rival-making steak by accident; making her rivals with Suneo's mother. During the onion-cutting scene where she and Suneo's mother battle for who makes the tastiest curry, her glasses help defend her eyes so that she will avoid crying from the onion's scent spreading into the eyes.
- Nobisuke Nobi (野比 のび助 Nobi Nobisuke) / Toby Nobi
- Adult: Voiced by: Ichirō Murakoshi (1973), Masayuki Katō (1979~October 1992), Yōsuke Naka (October 1992~March 2005), Yasunori Matsumoto (April 2005~) (Japanese), Tony Oliver (2014) (English)
- Young: Voiced by: Noriko Ohara (1979), Eiko Yamada (1984~1985), Noriko Ohara (1987), Yumiko Kobayashi (2005)
- Nobisuke (born on 12 March), is Nobita's father and laid-back salaryman. He appears inconsiderate of Nobita, often seen arriving home from work to placate Tamako's pride towards Nobita. He has trouble quitting smoking and is self-conscious about his inability to pass the driving test. He also has a poor memory, is a borderline alcoholic, and sometimes arrives home drunk from nightly business meetings. He often goes to golf which most Japanese businessmen and employees play. He had many similar personality traits with Nobita when he was young like getting bad grades, being poor at athletics and getting scolded by his father. He has an impressive talent of art, but did not choose to be an artist due to many reasons. He is fond of Nobita, and probably does not rebuke him much because most of Nobita's inabilities and weaknesses remind him of his own childhood faults. It was shown that he met Tamako on the day he had rejected an offer to be an artist from a wealthy gentleman, and feeling overjoyed, was running down the street at such speed that he barged straight into her, causing her to drop her ID card. This he latter returns, and the acquaintance gradually turns into love and marriage.
- Nobirou Nobi (野比 のび郎 Nobi Nobirō) / Chester Nobi
- Voiced by: Yasuo Muramatsu (1980-March 2005), Kōichi Hashimoto (November 2006) (Japanese), Keith Silverstein (2013) (English)
- Nobisuke's younger brother and an uncle of Nobita, with whom he is very friendly. He works overseas and only comes home during the Christmas-New Year holiday, which Nobita happily awaits every year since his uncle always gives him (and Doraemon) money and presents on that time. He has a noticeably tanned skin due to his frequent stays in the tropics. In one chapter, he recounts on his many animal encounters, including an elephant which he thought had perished during World War II; the elephant is actually saved by Nobita and Doraemon due to a case of predestination paradox.
- Nobie Nobi (野比 のび恵 Nobi Nobie)
- Nobirou's daughter and Nobita's younger cousin. She is fond of Nobita and would play with him whenever she visits his house.
- Tamao Kataoka (片岡 玉夫 Kataoka Tamao)
- Voiced by: Toshiharu Sakurai (November 2005)
- Tamako's younger brother and Nobita's uncle. He is a timid car salesman, and this timidness prevented him from expressing his feelings to the woman he loves. Nobita and Doraemon, despite initially deteriorating matters, finally help him to propose to (and be accepted by) the lady.
- Nobiru Nobi (野比 のびる Nobi Nobiru)
- Nobisuke's father and Nobita's paternal grandfather who died before Nobita's birth. He was very strict and very rude to Nobisuke, since he valued physical strength and athleticism which Nobisuke lacked, though after all he loved him very much. He did not apparently favour Nobisuke's artistic prowess, but he really treasured the portrait his son had made of him, and for which Nobisuke got first prize in school. His grandson only saw him when he traveled to the past. Despite being harsh to Nobisuke, he enjoys indulging Nobita when Nobita travels to the past.
- Nobita's Grandmother (のび太の祖母 Nobita no Sobo)
- Voiced by: Unknown (1973), Akiko Takamura (2000)
- Nobisuke's mother and Nobita's paternal grandmother who is only referred to as Grandma (おばあちゃん Obāchan) by Nobita. She died when Nobita was in kindergarten before the main storyline. She is always seen as a kind woman, if a bit eccentric, and unlike her husband never scolded Nobisuke for his lack of interest in "masculine activities", such as getting in a fight. Nobita remembers her very fondly, with most of his better childhood memories being playing with her; many of his toys, including his old kendama, which becomes a plot point in one film, were given to him by his grandmother. When Nobita travels to the past, she always recognizes him as her grandson even if he has grown up. She appeared in a few episodes. She takes care of Nobita on his former days and in one of The Doraemons manga, she was proud to see Nobita grown up into a teenage boy.
- Sewashi (セワシ) / Soby Nobi
- Voiced by: Keiko Yamamoto (1973), Yoshiko Ōta (1980~March 2005), Sachi Matsumoto (August 2005) (Japanese), Max Mittelman (2014) (English)
- Nobita's great-great-grandson, he is the one who sends Doraemon back to the past to look after Nobita. Sewashi first bought Doraemon in 2112 when Doraemon still had ears and his original factory paint. He sent him because his pocket money was not much due to the debts the family inherited from Nobita, and he also wanted to help out his troubled great-grandfather. He seems to have more common sense and is smarter than Nobita, but is just as reluctant when it comes to studying. Sewashi is also the owner of Doraemon's sister, Dorami.
- Nobisuke Nobi (野比ノビスケ Nobi Nobisuke)
- Voiced by: Noriko Ohara (1979~March 2005), Yoshiko Kamei (April 2005~)
- Nobita and Shizuka's son, named after Nobita's father. Though being as stupid as his father, he is a strong child and a good athlete, and brave enough to bully Gian and Suneo's sons. The first time he met the present Nobita, he even beat up him because he regarded him as an impostor. His real name is Nobita Nobi, Jr., but his parents often call him Nobisuke due to his grandfather's name.
Minamoto family
- Shizuka's Mother (静香の母 Shizuka no Haha)
- Voiced by: Keiko Yokozawa (1979~1981), Masako Matsubara (August 1981~March 2005), Ai Orikasa (April 2005~) (Japanese), Wendee Lee (2015) (English)
- Shizuka's mother. She is very kind, but can also be quite exigent on Shizuka sometimes. She has Shizuka take up piano lessons when the latter would rather study violin.
- Yoshio Minamoto (源 義雄 Minamoto Yoshio)

- Shizuka's father, a normal salaryman who often goes to movies with Shizuka. His best-known appearance in the series is when Nobita and Doraemon eavesdrop on him talking to Shizuka the night before the latter and Nobita's wedding, in which he trusts that Nobita will be able to take care of Shizuka. He is the only parent of Nobita's friends who is named.
- Peeko (ピー子 Pīko) / Sweet-sweet

- She sports curly hair and shares the fox-like face with her son and husband. She loves Suneo very much and spoils him rotten. She is generous to Suneo's friends, but just like her son, she likes to show off her jewellery or branded handbags and sometimes makes Nobita's mother jealous. In the episode "Mother Vs. Rich Mother Battle," she became Tamako's rival after eating the Rival-Making steak and competes Tamako of who makes the tastiest curry.

- Voiced by: Naoki Tatsuta (1985), Yuki Kaida (2006)

Goda family
- Gian's Mother (ジャイアンの母 Jaian no Haha)
- Voiced by: Kazuyo Aoki (1979~March 2005), Miyako Takeuchi (April 2005~) (Japanese), Jessica Gee (2014) (English)
- She is the owner of a small but successful store "Goda Greengrocers" (Goda's Goods in the English anime), as well as the only character Gian is deathly afraid of. Gian always tries to flee from her when she orders him to help in the matters of the store or do deliveries. Though being as strong as her son, she is a righteous person as she cruelly punishes her son whenever he bullies people, as she doesn't want to let Gian hurt other children. Her harsh treatment towards Gian is driven by her love, and Gian too, though sometimes speaking ill of her, cares for his mother deeply. This is evident from the way Gian had painstakingly made a rice-cake, actually a gadget from Doraemon, which had healed his mother's health problem, despite being constantly mocked and annoyed during the process by Nobita and Suneo. Had he lost focus, the gadget would have lost effectiveness, but his love for his mother prevented him from losing concentration..
- Gian's Father (ジャイアンの父 Jaian no Chichi)
- Voiced by: Unknown (1973), Masayuki Katō (1979~1980), Yū Shimaka (1987), Daisuke Gōri (November 1987), Yū Shimaka (1993) (Japanese), Kirk Thornton (2014) (English)
- He mostly works outside to help his wife's store. Though being the parent who is the least recurring in Fujiko's story, he is known to be the strongest man in the town he lives. He is somewhat like Gian and would often flaunt his strength with others, including Nobita's father, Nobisuke, who is just as weak as his son.
- Muku (ムク) / Pork Chop
- Voiced by: Takeshi Goda (1981), Kazuyo Aoki→Kazuya Tatekabe (~March 2005), Yasuhiro Takato (May 2007) (Japanese), Anthony Hansen (2013) (English)
- Gian and Jaiko's cowardly pet dog, who was a little stray dog when he was adopted by the Godas. Muku tries to be as brave as Gian, who praises his strength and courage, but in many emergencies he just runs away and enrages Gian. Initially Gian tried to get rid of him, but after he saved Gian, he has warmed up to him and become really friendly. Jaiko loves Muku very much and takes him on walks regularly. Muku occasionally shows the bad habit of gathering things from the locality in his kennel, much to Gian's embarrassment and his mother's displeasure.
- Gian's Uncle (ジャイアンの叔父 Jaian no Oji)
- Gian's maternal uncle. He is a black belt in judo and uses this ability to help other people. He taught Gian to use his strength in helping the weak. He also began teaching his nephew judo.
Other characters
- Kaminari (神成 Kaminari) / Mr. Rumbleton
- Kaminari is an old man living next to the Open Lot where Nobita and his friends play. It is seen often that the baseballs and footballs are breaking the glass of Kaminari's window (a woman's window in early manga chapters) or destroying one of his his favorite bonsai plants which angers Kaminari a lot. The children always try not to anger Kaminari and play carefully. Recovering the ball without getting shouted at is difficult. Gian and Suneo quite often break his glass and make Nobita the scapegoat to recover the ball. He also has a wife who rarely appears and a beautiful granddaughter that the boys are quite often infatuated with.
- Mii-chan (ミイちゃん) / Mimi
- Voiced by: Unknown→Mari Mashiba→Junko Asami→Kumiko Watanabe→Midori Nakazawa→Motoko Kumai→Fujiko Takimoto→Sachi Matsumoto (1981~March 2005)
- A regular female cat from Nobita's timeline, who either hangs out or goes on dates with Doraemon. She to Doraemon is similar with Shizuka to Nobita, however, besides Noramyako, Doraemon love interests her but still often has new crush on other girls in the whole series.
- In the close captioning of Invasion of the Body Swappers, Mimi is spelled Meenie; it is not known if this is an error.
- Tsubasa Ito (伊藤翼 Ito Tsubasa) / Sera Ivy
- Voiced by: Haruna Ikezawa (1970s series), Masayo Kurata (2005 series)[6] (Japanese), Mela Lee (2013) (English)
- Tsuasa Ito is a popstar and TV actress who is very popular. Suneo often gets her autograph and shows it off to his friends. Doraemon is apparently a huge fan of her since it is shown in one episode that he has pictures of her all over his closet.
- Yasuo (安雄 Yasuo)
- One of Nobita's classmates. He is distinguishable by always wearing a baseball cap. Although he appears fairly often in the series as a background character, his name is very rarely mentioned. Yasuo is often considered a generic representative of Nobita's friends. He is often credited in the movies as "Boy A." (少年A)
- Haruo (はる夫)
- One of Nobita's classmates who often appears with Yasuo. He is a moderately fat boy but smaller in size than Gian. Much like Yasuo, he appears fairly often as a generic representative of Nobita's friends. He is often credited in the movies as "Boy B." (少年B)
- Moteo Mote (茂手 もて夫 Mote Moteo)
- A boy in the neighborhood whom Jaiko admires secretly. He is popular among girls and also a talented manga artist.

- Saiko (最高 Saiko)
- A girl in the neighborhood whom Gian admires secretly.
- Gachako (ガチャ子 Gachako)
- Voiced by: Junko Hori (1973)
- An annoying female robot duck. She was removed from later versions of the manga and never appeared in the 1979 or 2005 anime series due to the fact that Fujiko Fujio heavily disliked her annoying personality, she hasn't made any other appearances since then.
- Botako (ボタ子 Botako)
- Voiced by: Masako Nozawa (1973), Kikumi Umeda (2005)
- A snobby and mean girl that rarely make an appearance.
