Student residence of City University of Hong Kong
The Student Residence Office in the City University of Hong Kong provides on-campus accommodation for almost 3,700 students. The student residence at Cornwall Street comprises 11 residential halls, 10 for undergraduate and 1 for postgraduate students, namely Jockey Club Humanity Hall, HSBC Prosperity Hall, Alumni Civility Hall, Jockey Club Academy Hall, Chan Sui Kau Hall, Lee Shau Kee Hall, Jockey Club Harmony Hall, Hall 8 (postgraduate hall), Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall, Hall 10 and Hall 11.[1]
Residental Halls
Jockey Club Humanity Hall (Hall 1)
The Hall is the tallest hall and was the first one to be christened. It is the second Hall housing the largest number of residents. The motto of the Hall is 'Be Living in Humanity Hall, Believing in Humanity'.[2]
HSBC Prosperity Hall (Hall 2)
The Hall aims to create a caring, sharing community. HSBC Prosperity Hall has its own emblem, song, magazine, sports and social service team. The Residents' Association organizes regular social services, music, recreational and sports activities, as well as Diversity Nights and 'Prosperian' Dinner.[3]
Alumni Civility Hall (Hall 3)
The Hall organizes activities such as the annual high table dinner, sports activities, Halloween Night and Poon Choi Dinner. Alumni are invited to join in the hall activities wherever appropriate to interact with the hall residents for experience sharing.[4]
Jockey Club Academy Hall (Hall 4)
The Hall has the "ABC Culture" for "A"cademic Excellence, "B"alanced Development, and "C"ommunity Citizenship. The hall activities cover cultural exchanges, community services, inter-hall competitions, career, and academic development. JCAC is the hall that lies closest to the campus. It is equipped with a gym room, pool table, video game set.[5]
Chan Sui Kau Hall (Hall 5)
CSK Hall has its ABC motto - 'Affection, Bonding and Care'. Activities like study tours, "scholarship trips", and mental health talks will also be arranged to enhance broad-based learning.[6]
Lee Shau Kee Hall (Hall 6)
The Hall aims to build up relationships between residences in the hall and encourage both academic and non-academic learning. Learning activities like photography, sports, career and research talks are organized for residents.[7]
Club Harmony Hall (Hall 7)
The Hall's 1/F to 6/F are single and double rooms providing over 200 bed spaces, whilst the 7/F to 9/F are suites and studios that can accommodate more than 90 residents. It is the only hall that hosts both undergraduate and postgraduate students in the university. "Culture, elegance and good taste" are the hallmark. The hall provides activities such as high table dinners, movie nights, sport events, talks, and various interest groups and workshops.[8]
Hall 8
Hall 8 is a postgraduate hall providing 416 single rooms for research and postgraduate students. Both female and male residents live on the same floor but in separate flats. The four single rooms of every flat are assigned to 4 residents of the same gender, who share toilet and bathroom facilities in that flat. The majority of the residents are research students doing their MPhil or PhD degrees. But the hall also has many residents doing taught master programs. Currently, around 95% residents are non-local students and 5% are local students.[9]
Sir Gordon and Lady Ivy Wu Hall (Hall 9)
The Hall was established in 2006 and was hosting residents from over twenty countries in 2012 to 2013. The Hall aims to create community service opportunities for residents, such as the roles of floor representatives, fire marshals, floor mentors, and various ad-hoc volunteer positions.[10]
Hall 10
The residential team combines individuals from Canada, Croatia, Hong Kong and mainland China. Hall 10 places a particular emphasis on drawing out the artistic talents of residents.[11]
Hall 11
The Hall aims enrich students' life through organizing a wide range of activities. Hall 11 has a Skygarden which is open to residents of all halls.[12]
Hall Facilities
Bed Study Room
There are 3 types of room: single room, double room and 3-person apartment unit. Only hall 7 provides the 3-person apartment units. Each room consists with the basic elements: magnetic key-card door system, window-type air conditioner with meter, IP phone and network connection, single bed including mattress and mattress pad, writing desk, chair, bookshelf, whiteboard, pedestal, wardrobe, rubbish bin, desk lamp and washroom. Two joined rooms (for instance 608A and 608B) share one washroom which includes a shower booth, a lavatory and wash basin counter sets with mirror.
There exists several differences among different halls and A-type rooms and B-type rooms.
- Except for Hall 10 and Hall 11, A-type rooms are a little bit bigger than B-type rooms. While in Hall 10 and Hall 11, they share nearly the same size.
- Except for Hall 10 and Hall 11, there are doors for washing room entrance for weekly toilet and washing room cleaning. In hall 10 and 11, the cleaners need to penetrate through room doors of residents.
- Hall 10 and Hall 11 have an extra vertical closet for each room, which is not provided in other halls.
Communal facilities
Common room on floors
There are home furniture such as television and some simple cooking devices for floor meeting and gathering. The 5th, 7th and 8th floors of Hall 11 do not have common rooms due to the existence of the Sky Garden.
Function room
The function rooms are located on the ground floor of each hall. It provides an area for hall event, meeting and resident programmes.
Piano room
The piano rooms are located on the ground floor of each hall. Residents can make booking through the security counter.
Laundry room
There are washing machines and clothes dryers at each laundry room. For hall 10 and hall 11, the laundry room is located on the ground floor. For Lee Shau Kee Hall and JC Harmony Hall, it is located on 10/F. For the other halls, it located on the roof. Apart from washing clothes, residents can borrow iron and iron board at the security counter.
Mail box
Each student room has a mailbox which is located at the hall lobby.
Payphone
The payphone installed at each hall lobby are provided for making IDD call.
Computer Rooms and Printing services
The computer room located on the ground floor of each hall. Apart from computer, printer and scanner are also provided. For the printing services, a free print quota of 300 pages for one academic year will be given to the residents admitted in Semester A, and a quota of 150 pages will be given to the residents admitted in Semester B.
The Sky Garden
Hall 11 embodies a sky garden, which provides the residents a space for leisure time, studying or discussion, organizing activities such as growing vegetables.
Multi-function halls
Multi-function hall A,B,C are suitable for large-scale event such as forum, exhibition, high-table dinner, party and so on. Besides, Multi-function hall C is also open for leisure activities at night time in which the table tennis equipment and table games are provided.
- Cafeteria
The Homey Kitchen is operated by Joseph's catering service Ltd. It is located at multi-function hall B which provide a variety of multinational food for students and staff.
- Gymnasium
The Physical Fitness Room is located on the ground floor of hall 10 and hall 11.It is provided for the resident of CityU Student Residence and CityU staff Members. The users should be the CityU Physical Fitness Room User Card holder. For entry, user can register at Hall 11 Security counter.
Residence Association
Residence association is formed by minimum 5 people, which aimed at organising activities for hall residence. Here are the roles and function of the residence association.
Compulsory post
The compulsory post are the president, internal vice president, external vice president, general secretary and financial secretary. The president is the representative of the whole association who hold leadership among the association. The internal vice president mainly being the assistant of the president who also responsible to maintain a harmonious relationship between the committees. The external vice president mainly being the assistant of the president who also responsible to hold conference with other hall residence association. The general secretary is responsible for typing documents and recording conference minutes and the financial secretary is responsible for all financial issues in the association, like claiming money for buying resources.
Non-compulsory post
There are also some non-compulsory post such as internal secretary and external secretary who assist the work of the internal and external vice president. Also, the recreational secretary is the main planner of events, especially organising orientation camp. Furthermore, the sports secretary who perform a cheering role in Edmond Ko cup competition and responsible to invite sports players to participate in inter-hall sports competition. There is also the promotion secretary who carry out the work of promoting activities which held by the residence association to all residence, like designing posters and leaflets. The welfare secretary, who need to find sponsorship which can support the events and also organize some discount food or stationary ordering for residence. Last but not the least, the public-relationship secretary who aims at promoting a positive image of the association by building good relationship with both committees, residence and students.
Student Residence
Student Residence are formed by three departments, including Student Affairs Committee, Student Residence Office and Residence Masters. Three departments are dependent and work continuously. Here are some details about Student Residence.
Student Affairs Committee
Student Affairs Committee aims at advising the Vice-President (Student Affairs) on the matters relating to the formulation and review of policies related to student residence, student welfare, student finance and the provision of communal or other facilities for students. Besides, it also aims at considering and making recommendations for policies and directions related to student support, student development and student affairs. It is responsible for policy in hall area.
Student Residence Office
Student Residence Office aims at providing on-campus accommodation for almost 3,700 students. Their goal is to create a safe, supportive and stimulating residential community that embraces diversity, participation, learning and development of professionalism. It is responsible for Management, Admission, Facilities Management, Residence Life, Financial Planning and Control, Data Management and Research, Capital Development Project, Incident and Crisis Management.
Residence Masters
Residence Masters is responsible for Selection & Development of Residence Tutors and Residence Life Assistant, Collaborations with Residents' Associations, Living Learning Programmes and initiatives.
