Statonia

Statonia was an ancient Etruscan city located in what is now southern Tuscany (province of Grosseto), central Italy.

The ancient town was located south-west to the modern Pitigliano, in the area of Poggio Buco, not far from the localities of Corano and Poggio Formica, where several prehistoric tombs have been excavated. Its remains are on a tuff butte. According to archaeologists, Statonia's period of highest splendour would have been the 7th century BC. The remains include a necropolis with a tombs carved in the rocks, parts of a wall curtain and the ruins of a medieval church.
