St Matthews Anglican Church, Grovely
St Matthews is a heritage-listed Anglican church in Church Road, Mitchelton, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.[1] It is within the Parish of Grovely (a former Brisbane suburb name).
History
In 1865 John and Mary Nicholson were pioneers in the area. They built a home and named it Groveley Lodge (the extra 'e' in the name was dropped in later years).[2] In the absence of a church in the area, the Nicholsons held services within Groveley Lodge and later gave a portion of their land to build the church. Somewhat unusually the land was not given to the church, but was placed into a private trust. John and Mary Nicholson are buried in the churchyard cemetery.[2][3][4]
Heritage listing
The church was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992.[1]
