St Ambrose Barlow is a Roman Catholic secondary school[1] located in Wardley, Greater Manchester, England. In an Ofsted inspection in 2008, the school was awarded Outstanding.[2]
The school serves a wide range of parishes including St Charles' (Swinton), St Mark’s (Pendlebury), St Mary’s (Swinton), St Luke’s (Irlams o' th' Height), St Edmund’s (Little Hulton) and Christ the King (Walkden). St Ambrose Barlow has been accredited with many national awards including National Teaching School status, the School Inclusion Award and Dyslexia Friendly Status. 92% of pupils are baptised Roman Catholic.[3]
In April 2013, the school moved into a new building in Wardley near Swinton after being located in Shaftesbury Road in nearby Swinton since its foundation in the 1950s. St George's RC High School closed in August 2014 with most pupils transferring to St Ambrose Barlow's.
In September 2013 an inspection of the school was carried out in accordance with Section 48 of the Education Act 2005. The Diocese of Salford awarded the school "Outstanding" in all seven categories and described the school as:
"...an outstanding Catholic school which puts Christ at the centre of all its endeavours. The deliberate and inspirational option for those in the greatest need has been locally and nationally acclaimed through a wide variety of awards. The school continually strives for excellence offering both pupils and staff a rich faith experience permeating all aspects of school life. The new learning environment has been designed to ensure equality of access for all resulting in an outstanding community for learning. The cohesive team of governors and staff provide a challenging and innovative vision which is translated and understood at all levels. The impact of the school’s commitment to excellence throughout has raised standards to a high level." [3]
In addition to its status as National Teaching School, St Ambrose Barlow was one of 30 in the country to become a ‘School of Creativity’ - chosen by the government to work with a learning programme developed by the Arts Council of England.[4]
Executive Principal, Mrs. C. M. Garside, was awarded CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for Services to Education in January 2015.[4]
Mr Ben Davis has been appointed as the new Headteacher of St Ambrose Barlow.
St Ambrose Barlow was one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales.[5]
