St. Patrick’s College (Tamil: சம்பத்திரிசியார் கல்லூரி Campattiriciyār Kallūri, SPC) is a private school in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It was founded in 1850 by Roman Catholic missionaries.
History
The Jaffna Catholic English School was established in 1850 by Monsignor Orazio Bettacchini, an Italian Roman Catholic missionary.[1] The school was later renamed Jaffna Boys’ Seminary. The school was registered as a High School in 1881 and renamed St. Patrick’s College on 10 January 1881.[1] Rev Fr J R Smythe was the first principal of St Patrick's College. The son of a Protestant clergyman, while Smythe was a Police Magistrate of Jaffna he was received into the Roman Catholic Church and ordained on 8 December 1868. The school's foundation stone was laid on Sunday 4 December 1881.[1]
