Spotsylvania High School SHS) is a high school in Spotsylvania County, Virginia.[3] Located on Courthouse Road amid a rural, pastoral setting, It serves the southern half of the county.[4] The school's athletic mascot is the Knight, in recognition of former colonial governor Alexander Spotswood's Knights of the Golden Horseshoe. 2015 enrollment at SHS stands at about 1,150 students (grades 9-12) with a faculty and staff nearing 150. SHS is the least densely populated of the public schools in the area. The school boasts a strong Army JROTC program - the Knight and Raider Battalions - consisting of cadets from both SHS and neighboring Massaponax High School. The Knight Battalion has maintained an exemplary rating of "Honor Unit with Distinction" since 2009. The current building is the fourth to bear the name of Spotsylvania High School since the county's public school district was established in 1940. Spotsylvania County is also designated as a CVirginia Commonwelath Governor's School and is in the process of obtaining membership as an International Baccalaureate school.

About the building

Construction on the current school site began in May, 1992 and the completed building was occupied by faculty and students in January, 1994. The cost of the project was reported to be $23.7 million. A total of 75.5 acres (306,000 m2) were developed for the school. Within the building there is 257,066 square feet (23,882.2 m2) of space. Total capacity is 1583 students in 79 classrooms. The auditorium can seat 1300, the gymnasium seats 2000, and the stadium seats 5,000 people. Nearby Massaponax High School - also in Spotsylvania County - was opened in 1998 and shares the same architectural footprint.

Administration

Mr. Russel "Rusty" Davis is the current Principal of Spotsylvania High School. His vision is supported by Assistant Principals Jon Patterson and Cheri Bickerstaff, Activities Director Melvin "Buddy" Herndon and Director of Student Services Cheri Gardner.

Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program gives students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still at Spotsylvania County. Upon completion of the courses, students may receive advanced placement and/or credit when entering college. Academically oriented students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Advanced Placement Program. Students take these courses at high school. Advanced Placement (AP) courses follow the suggested College Board course curriculum and serve to prepare students for the AP examinations in May. AP Courses listed below are offered based on enrollment. However, depending on how many students sign up for an AP class, depends on which course is offered. So some of the courses may not be offered because there are not enough students that sign up for it. Grades earned carry weighted credit in the GPA calculation:
