Spice Digital Limited, previously known as Cellebrum Technologies Limited, is a developer of Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS), Mobile applications and Internet products and services with headquarters at Noida in NCR, India. Spice Digital is a subsidiary of listed entity S Mobility, which has diversified interests in telecom space.[2] The Company offers services for Telecom Operators, Enterprises and Government, using different mobile connectivity medium of Voice, IVR, SMS, USSD, WAP, 3G, Mobile Applications & Mobiles.

History

The company was incorporated in 2000 with a staff of 13. It invested Rs 100 crores(1 Billion Rupees), in July 2006, to soup up its technology and expand its product line. It set up a Rs 50 crore incubation fund for up start ventures.[3] The company doubled its employee strength in 2006 taking its headcount to 400.[4] It revamped its operations in 2007 to enhance its Research and Development capabilities.[5]

Products and Services

Spice Digital has received a semi-closed pre-paid payment wallet license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 09.04.2015. The license is valid up to 30.06.2020.[6][7]

Acquisitions / subsidiaries

BeoWorld (Malaysia)

Spice Digital acquired Device VAS Company BeoWorld in order to expand their product line. In Nov 2010, Spice Mobility announced that its subsidiary, Spice Digital has entered into agreement to acquire, directly or through its subsidiary, 100% of the issued share capital of Beoworld. Beoworld is a company incorporated in Malaysia, it provides an open platform and market place to promote and monetize 3rd party application development and content for mobile devices on MediaTek (MTK) and Android platforms.[8][9][10]

Spice Labs (India)

Spice Labs was incubated to work in the area of mobile applications space. Spice Labs has worked extensively on BlackBerry platform with over 50 Million application downloads. With Android catching up of late, significant work is now being undertaken on this platform.

Spice Digital (Africa)

In early 2010, operations were started in Africa with headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. In 2013, after massive expansion, headquarters has been shifted to Johannesburg, South Africa.

Spice Digital acquired 26 per cent shares of Vavia Technology

Spice Digital has, on September 5, 2014 acquired 26 per cent (3,514) equity shares in share capital of Bangalore-based start up Vavia Technologies.[11]

Spice Digital acquired 38.53 per cent stake in Anytime Learning

In January 2015, Spice Digital had acquired 38.53% stake in Anytime Learning Private Limited, the Noida-based online education provider. Consequently Anytime Learning has become an Associate Company of Spice Digital. [12][13]

Spice Digital acquired 26 per cent stake in Creative Functionapps Lab

Spice Mobility has acquired 26 per cent stake in technology firm Creative Functionapps Lab in July 2015. The company in a regulatory filing said, " Spice Digital Limited, a subsidiary of the Company, has acquired 26 per cent stake in Creative Functionapps Lab Private Limited."[14]

Spice Stellar Mobile Series

It is a series of mobiles launched by Spice Digital. According to February 2013 this series has 5 Android Smartphones including a tablet.Their names are Stellar Xtacy (known as mi-352), Stellar craze (known as mi-335), Stellar nhance (known as mi-435), Stellar pad (known as mi-1010), Stellar virtuoso (known as mi-495), Stellar pinnacle (known as mi-530).[15] Where Xtacy is low budget Android phone, craze, nhance and pad is mid budget phone and tablet, and virtuoso and pinnacle is high ended multimedia phone nhance is also placed it this category because of it features and price.[15]

On 4 July 2014, Spice launched its all-new Stellar 445 budget quad-core smartphone in India[16]

Spice Digital launches VAS marketing tool for Indian telcos - Spice Digital, a part of the Spice Connect Group, said that its iPEN (intelligent post event notification), a contextual marketing platform, has been successfully running in India with several telecom operators. The company recently launched iPEN in association with Videocon. It said that the customer response has been very encouraging. [19]

SpiceMudra records Rs 200 crore of transactions in 3 months - SpiceMudra, a prepaid payment wallet service developed by Spice Digital, has recorded Rs 200 crore of transactions in just three months. The wallet service with a strong focus on domestic remittances and enterprise payments recorded transactions worth Rs 50 crore in October alone. [20]

Spice Mobility wins Sach Bharat award - Indian telecom solutions provider Spice Mobility has been conferred with Sach Bharat award for its social entrepreneurship program ‘Ek Soch’ at the recently held Sach Bharat Conference organized jointly by the Times Foundation, ASSOCHAM and Srei Foundation.

Sach Bharat seeks to promote Spirituality at Work and the participating companies were evaluated for their incorporation of four key dimensions in their workplaces: Devotion and Righteousness at work; Self Governance; Growth and Welfare of all and Simplicity and Austerity at work. [21]
