---|---|
In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the spectator is a type of aberration related to the beholder.
Publication history
The spectator first appeared in the adventure module The Secret of Bone Hill (1981),[1] and then appeared in the original first edition Monster Manual II (1983).[2] The spectator was further detailed, along with the searechter (marine spectator) in Dragon #139 (November 1988).[3]
The spectator appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons for the Forgotten Realms setting under the "beholder-kin" entry in Monstrous Compendium Volume Three: Forgotten Realms Appendix (1989),[4] and reprinted under the "beholder" entry in the Monstrous Manual (1993).[5] The spectator also appeared in I, Tyrant (1996).[6]
The spectator appeared in third edition for the Forgotten Realms under the "beholderkin" entry in Monstrous Compendium: Monsters of Faerûn (2001).[7] The spectator also appeared under the "beholderkin" entry in Lords of Madness (2005).[8]
Description
A spectator is an extraplanar relative of the beholder with four eyestalks. Somewhat mild and even-tempered, spectators have even been known to form friendships with other creatures, a trait that no other beholderkin or true beholder ever displays.
