Writing for Allmusic, critic Zac Johnson wrote of the album "John Prine's contemporary touches on these old favorites may provide new insights, but the new versions rarely surpass the originals."[1] Music critic Bill Frater wrote "His story-songs still sound touching and sentimental, and comfortable as an old pea coat. If for some reason you don't know these classic tunes, this is worth getting and if you do you'll appreciate getting reacquainted."[2]
