2011 shooting

On Wednesday, April 6, 2011, a gunman killed one and injured at least three others, including a 4-year-old injured by shrapnel, at a shooting on the Opelika campus. The school was closed for the rest of the day. Medical and counseling personnel, and law enforcement officials, were on site. The gunman later revisited the school and readily admitted he was the shooter, whereupon police were summoned. The man was tackled by police and arrested without incident. Police believe he may have been targeting his former partner, and as such, that it is an isolated incident.
