South Queensland Academy

South Queensland Academy (サウスクイーンズランドアカデミー, Sausu Kuīnzurando Akademī, SQA) was a Japanese international school in Jimboomba, Logan City, Queensland. It was an overseas branch of a Japanese private school, or a Shiritsu zaigai kyōiku shisetsu (私立在外教育施設).^[1] It was a part of the Hills Educational Foundation, and was associated with the South Queensland International College (SQIC) and Hills Language College (HLC).^[2] It was affiliated with Seirinkan High School,^[3] and it served the high school level.^[4]^[5]

The school opened in 1992 (Heisei Year 4).^[3] The Japanese Ministry of Education (Monbusho or, today, MEXT) certified the school on December 18 of that year. It was decertified by MEXT on March 31, 2013 (Heisei 25).^[5]

The schools serve different grade/year levels. The Nishiyamato and Seigakuin schools do not have senior high school/sixth form students, while other overseas private school branches do.

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) classifies almost all of these schools as shiritsu zaigai kyōiku shisetsu (overseas branches of Japanese private schools). The Shanghai Japanese School is classified by MEXT as nihonjin gakkō (Japanese international school) as it is operated by a Japanese association. At the Liceo Mexicano Japonés (LMJ) in Mexico City, only the Mexican program offers senior high school, while its Japanese program ends at junior high school; therefore LMJ not included on this list.

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) classifies the Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney Japanese schools as nihonjin gakkō (Japanese international schools) as they are operated by Japanese associations. The former South Queensland Academy was classified as a shiritsu zaigai kyōiku shisetsu (overseas branches of Japanese private schools) and was the only Japanese school in Australia to offer senior high school-level education. The Russian Embassy School only serves primary school.
