Mr.Mr. is composed of six songs, focusing on "dazzling" electropop and R&B-pop.[1] According to member Seohyun, the EP incorporates "exciting" R&B sounds with "cool, simple" melodies.[2] The opening track, "Mr.Mr.", was produced by The Underdogs, who have worked with several American recording artists such as Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, and Britney Spears. It is an electropop and R&B-pop song that mixes a hip hop beat and EDM-inspired buildups.[1][3] The second song, "Goodbye," is a pop-rock number that is instrumented by snare drums and hi-hats.[1] "Europa" (Korean: 유로파), meanwhile, draws from retro late-1980s Europop and disco-pop genres.[1][3]
"Wait a Minute" was described as a "bouncy" jazz-pop track with "beautiful [harmonizations]."[4] "Back Hug" (Korean: 백허그) was written and composed by Norwegian songwriters, Ingrid Skretting and Jesper Borgen, and co-written by Cho Yun-kyoung.[5] Skretting previously worked with S.M. Entertainment and composed three songs for Girls' Generation's debut album, Girls' Generation. The songs features a "simple, snappy" R&B production that finds the girls request, "Please cover my heart."[1] The EP concludes with "Soul"—an uptempo Korean version of the group's first original Chinese song, "Find Your Soul", released in 2013.[1] The song was used as the theme song for commercials for the Korean MMORPG video game, Blade & Soul, in Chinese-language markets across Asia.[6]
Promotion and release
The album was digitally released on February 24, 2014 at 17:00 (KST).[7] The album, consisting of six songs, was released worldwide through iTunes, Melon, Genie, and other online music portals. The physical album hit stores on February 27, 2014. In addition, the group's first comeback performance had been scheduled for March 6, 2014 on M! Countdown.[8][9] The group continued their first week of performances for the album on KBS' Music Bank, MBC's Music Core and SBS's Inkigayo on March 7,8 and 9, respectively.[10] Girls’ Generation performed both “Mr.Mr.” and “Wait a Minute” on Mnet’s “M! Countdown” last March 6 and “Show! Music Core” last March 8 and both “Mr.Mr.” and “Back Hug” on KBS’s “Music Bank” and SBS’s “Inkigayo”. The group also made several variety show appearances. Several members recorded an episode of “Radio Star”, and all nine members recorded an appearance for “Healing Camp”. Both shows with Girls’ Generation were aired in March.[11][12][13] The Chinese Edition of the album was be released on June 16, 2014 in China. The edition includes the Chinese version of "Soul" in place of the Korean version.
Critical reception
Upon its release, Mr.Mr received favorable reviews from music critics. Heather Pharres from AllMusic labelled the EP "a set of songs that offers something for every kind of Girls' Generation and expands their musical reach."[3] Writing for Billboard, Jeff Benjamin called the six songs off the EP "strong" and called it a more "impressive effort" in favor of the group's 2013 album I Got a Boy. He further deemed the EP "a tight bundle of songs that still see the group dipping and experimenting into new sonic territory, but possibly more focused than ever."[1]
Commercial performance
Mr.Mr. claimed the top spot of the South Korean Gaon Album Chart.[14] It became the fifth highest-selling album and the best-selling album by a girl group of 2014 in South Korea, selling 163,209 copies.[15] Mr.Mr. debuted at number 110 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 3,000 copies in its first week. In doing so, the EP became Girls' Generation's highest-charting release on the Billboard 200 following subgroup TTS's Twinkle charted at number 126 in 2012.[16]
All six songs from the album charted on the Gaon Digital Chart: "Mr.Mr." at number 1, "Goodbye" at number 10, "Wait a Minute" at number 18, "Back Hug" at number 24, "Europa" at number 25, and "Soul" at number 33.[17]
