Choi Soo-young (born February 10, 1990), most often credited as Sooyoung, is a South Korean singer and actress. She was a member of Korean-Japanese duo Route θ and is a member of South Korean girl group Girls' Generation.

Sooyoung has also participated in various television dramas such as The 3rd Hospital (2012), Dating Agency: Cyrano (2013), and My Spring Days (2014).

Early life

Sooyoung was born in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, South Korea on February 10, 1990.[1] She is the younger sister of Choi Soo-jin, who is a musical theatre actress.[2] Sooyoung was initially discovered through SM Open Audition during her fifth grade.[3] She later won first place at the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition and debuted in Japan as a member of the group Route θ.[4] The group released three singles before disbanding in 2003.[5] Sooyoung returned to SM Entertainment afterwards and eventually became a member of the South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. The group debuted in August 2007 and gained significant popularity with the release of their hit single "Gee" in 2009.[6] That same year, Sooyoung graduated from JeongShin Women's High School.[7] On February 15, 2016, she graduated from Chung-Ang University with a degree in Theater and Film as well as receiving an Lifetime Achievement Award as Honorary Ambassador of the the school at the graduation ceremony.[8] Her fellow Girls' Generation member, Kwon Yuri also attended the same university.[9]

Music career

In 2005, she released a song titled "I Am" for the Korean version of Inuyasha.[10]

In 2008, Sooyoung and Yuri sang the trot song "Kkok" (Hangul: "꼭") for the opening theme of the SBS TV miniseries Working Mom (Hangul: 워킹 맘).[11][12] She was also featured in "Oh! My Love to You" (Korean: "너만을 느끼며"; or alternatively titled "Feeling Only You") by The Blue (Kim Min-jong and Son Ji-chang), alongside bandmate Tiffany.[13][14] In 2014, Sooyoung sang the song "Wind Flower" for the OST of her drama My Spring Days.[15]

Songwriting

She made her first contribution as a songwriter for Girls' Generation's Korean third album, The Boys, penning the lyrics for the track "How Great Is Your Love". Along with fellow members Yuri and Seohyun, she also wrote the song "Baby Maybe", from Girls' Generation's fourth album I Got a Boy.[16]

Acting career

Sooyoung played a minor role in the 2007 KBS2 sitcom Unstoppable Marriage alongside Yuri.[17] She co-starred with Lee Yeon-hee and Kangin in the 2008 romantic comedy film Hello, Schoolgirl (Korean: 순정만화); as well as SBS TV miniseries Oh! My Lady starring Choi Siwon and Chae Rim with two of her group mates, Jessica and Hyoyeon.[18] In 2011, she made a cameo in SBS miniseries Paradise Ranch starring her labelmates Changmin and Lee Yeon-hee.[19]

On March 20, 2012, she was casted in a medical drama titled The 3rd Hospital as violist "Eu Jin", who is part of the "love square", along with actors Kim Seung-woo, Oh Ji-ho and Kim Min-jung.[20] Her acting was very well received by both viewers and critics, with co-actor Oh Ji Ho remarking that Sooyoung is "the best actress in Girls' Generation while viewers are drawn to her natural display of emotion".[21][22] In the same year, she made a cameo appearance in SBS drama A Gentleman's Dignity as herself.[23]

On April 2, 2013, it was announced that Soo-young would be starring with Lee Jonghyuk in tvN drama, Dating Agency: Cyrano.[24] The drama is based on the webtoon, "Cyrano Agency", and is a prequel to the original Cyrano Agency movie. Sooyoung played the role of the leading female character, Gong Minyoung. Filming for Dating Agency: Cyrano started in the middle of April, and the first episode was aired near the end of May 2013.[25]

In September 2014, Soo-young played the lead role in MBC's drama My Spring Days opposite Kam Woo-sung. Her character, Lee Bom, is a terminally ill patient who gets a heart transplant and meets her donor's husband, a widow with two kids who lost his wife in an accident.[26] Soo-young won the "Best Actress in a Miniseries" award at the 2014 MBC Drama Awards.[27] and the "Excellence Award for Actress" at the 2015 Korean Drama Awards for her outstanding performance in the role.[28]

In 2015, she was casted as the female lead in the new KBS2 drama special Perfect Sense which is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2016.[29]

Show-hosting career

Prior to her debut as a member of Girls' Generation, she was a VJ of M.net Hello Chat, alongside Super Junior's Kangin.[30] She also worked as a radio DJ with Super Junior's Sungmin on DMB ChunBangJiChuk Radio (Hangul: 천방지축 라디오; lit. Reckless Radio) from July 2007 to January 2008.[31] From May to November 2009, she was a presenter for MBC TV children's game show Fantastic Duo (Korean: 환상의 짝꿍) alongside Oh Sang-jin and Kim Je-dong.[32]

On August 20, 2011, she hosted K-Pop All Star Live in Niigata together with Yuri & Tiffany.[33]

On May 30, 2012, it was announced that Soo-young will be the new MC in SBS TV Entertainment Tonight with Yoon Do-hyun.[34]

Sooyoung was also the MC for several events in 2013, including the 17th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival alongside Shin Hyun-joon,[35] 2013 Women’s Film Festival in Jongno, Seoul[36] and SBS Entertainment Awards held on December 30.[37]

In 2014, it was announced that Soo-young will be hosting the 2014 Miss Korea Pageant with Oh Sang-jin. The event was held on July 15, 2014.[38]

Personal life

On the way to participate in a charity event on Sunday, August 28, 2011, Soo-young and her sister were involved in a car crash.[39] The crash was due to another motorist's driving, leaving Soo-young hospitalized with a fractured tailbone. Due to this, she was unable to participate in Smtown Live in Tokyo Special Edition and Girls' Generation's concert in Taiwan. During this time, she made a video (in English and Korean), thanking her fans for their concern and assuring them she was doing her best to recover.[40] On September 26, 2011, Soo-young was confirmed to rejoin Girls' Generation in their activities.[41]

In January 2014, it was confirmed that Soo-young is in a relationship with actor Jung Kyung-ho.[42][43]
