The fifth season of the American television drama series Sons of Anarchy created by Kurt Sutter about the lives of a close-knit outlaw motorcycle club operating in Charming, a fictional town in California's Central Valley. The show centers on protagonist Jackson "Jax" Teller (Charlie Hunnam), first shown as vice president then as president of the club, who begins questioning the club and himself.
Season Five premiered on September 11, 2012 on cable network FX.[1] The premiere ("Sovereign"), directed by series executive producer and principal director Paris Barclay and written by series creator and executive producer Kurt Sutter, was one of the highest-rated telecasts in FX's history.[2]
Plot
Following Tig's murder of Damon Pope's daughter Veronica, the Niners attack SAMCRO and ambush a cargo shipment. The growing conflict between the Niners and SAMCRO, along with several home invasions targeting people linked to the SOA, force Jax to meet with Pope. Bobby is released by Romeo and becomes SAMCRO's vice president at the same time SAMCRO welcomes in three Nomads. On his end, Pope summons the Niners and orders them to stop any attacks on SAMCRO, as the attacks make the police more suspicious and could tie the attacks to him, something he wants to avoid at all costs. To ensure the link is broken, Pope has Laroy executed and mutilated, and he arranges a meeting of SAMCRO, the Niners, and his second-in-command, August. August provokes a fight between Jax and the new leader of the Niners, and has the new leader murdered, an act meant to demonstrate Pope's power. Another Niner, Tyler, is promoted on the spot to lead the Niners. Pope eventually captures Tig and makes him watch as the latter's daughter, Dawn, is burned alive. Pope threatens to do the same to Tig's other daughter, Fawn, if Tig tells anybody about the event. After Pope leaves, Tig retaliates by murdering the detective on the scene and another man hired to clean Dawn's body. The same night, Unser is beaten during a home invasion at Gemma's house, and Pope hires fake witnesses to have Jax, Chibs, and Tig arrested for murdering a police officer and a Niner, in order to have them sent to jail.
SAMCRO temporarily hides in Diosa Internacional, a prostitution house run by Nero Padilla, Gemma's new boyfriend. The club buys time to ensure Mexican protection from Romeo in jail. Jax grows closer to Nero, who slowly begins to serve as a model for the "big picture" and "getting out", after Jax accompanies Nero to check on his son, who requires special equipment. Jax marries Tara that day, before being arrested. Clay asks Opie to protect Jax in prison, prompting Opie to get himself arrested. In prison, Pope has bought the wardens and informs Jax that Tig is to stay in prison forever; furthermore, another Son must be killed. At this point, Jax tells Opie the truth about Clay, including what Clay has done to members of their respective families. In a horrific twist, Ope sacrifices himself and is murdered in prison. Jax, overwhelmed by grief, arranges a deal with Pope to check on the home invasions and to get Tig out of jail. Jax talks to Tig, and in exchange for getting Tig out of jail, has him promise never to vote against Jax again.
A wider rift develops in Gemma's relationship with Tara, as Tara refuses to allow Gemma any more control over Tara's family. Jax reinforces this, after Opie's murder. Jax also demands that Nero end his relationship with Gemma, who reacts poorly and seeks comfort from a random stranger in a bar, who turns out to be a professional car thief.
Nero tries to help Gemma and Jax reconcile, resulting in Jax's giving her the chance to take care of Abel and Thomas. However, because she had gotten high with Unser earlier in the day, Gemma falls asleep behind the wheel with the boys on board, causing an accident that almost kills Jax's two sons.
The home invasions continue, and Rita, Roosevelt's pregnant wife, is inadvertently killed. The invaders are later revealed to be the new Nomad club members, hired by Clay to put pressure on Jax and make him step down as president. Knowing now that the Nomads can be linked to him, Clay double-crosses them and has two of them executed in Unser's garage. The sole survivor, Frankie Diamonds, hires black men to attack Jax the night Gemma has her car crash. Clay lies and tells Jax that the same people that attacked Jax also attacked Gemma that night. Jax kills the attackers and finds Frankie taking Nero and Lyla hostage; Frankie then confesses about Clay's involvement. He later flees with Chibs and Nero's money. After Jax learns the truth about Gemma's accident from Nero, Tara forbids her from having any further contact with the boys. However, Jax sees an opportunity and makes a deal with Gemma; if she can be with Clay and find proof of Clay's involvement with the home invasions, she will regain access to the boys. Gemma agrees to the deal.
Jax makes deals with both Jacob Hale and Damon Pope in order to ensure the development of Charming Heights, so the Teller-Morrow garage will have exclusivity on Charming Heights development work. Pope agrees, but demands Jax deliver Tig for execution after Tig has served his purpose. Jax agrees. SAMCRO also goes after the prison inmate who murdered Opie.
Juice reveals to Clay the truth of his betrayal and the RICO case. Jax learns from Roosevelt that Juice had betrayed them, and eventually the two of them talk with Juice, who confesses everything he did, as well Frankie's revelation to Juice that Clay was behind the home invasions. Jax makes a deal with Juice that, if he can find the documents that prove Clay's involvement, Jax will not reveal Juice's betrayal to the club, and he'll remain a member. Reluctantly, Juice agrees.
Tara attempts to visit Otto several times, in order to convince him to reverse his statement and shut down Romeo's RICO case on the club. Although Otto recants his statement, he murders a nurse with a cross which belonged to Luann that Tara brought to him, making Tara an accessory to murder. Clay discovers the truth about RICO and tries to secure protection for himself with Romeo, warning him that Jax will try to destroy their leverage. Romeo suggests Clay retake the President by removing Jax, but Clay refuses and instead tries to convince Jax. However, Jax does not yield and attempts to secure a relationship between Romeo and Henry Lin in order for the Chinese to secure weapons to the cartel. When Juice finds the documents and is about to show this proof to the club, the cartel kidnaps Jax, which buys Clay enough time to secure the documents. Jax has Romeo agree to his plan.
Bobby secures a deal with Clay to confess everything, in return for which Bobby will vote to let him live. Clay does so and is excommunicated from the Club, but not executed (because of Bobby's vote). Jax sets a meeting with Lin and Romeo to secure gun deliveries every two weeks, although the change will take three months. As a result, Jax sets a meeting with Galaan and agrees to sell to Romeo one last time. However, Romeo and the cartel decide to take the weapons by force, leaving SAMCRO on the hook to pay for them. Galaan, displeased, retaliates by kidnapping Wendy. Clay arranges a meeting with Galaan, whereby Clay agrees to act as an intermediary for new weapons customers. Galaan agrees, as he trusts Clay, and he arranges safe passage for Clay and Gemma into Belfast. Wendy, furious once she hears about Abel's kidnapping, threatens to report everything that happened to Abel. Jax assaults Wendy and injects her with drugs, and says he'll demand a drug test on her, if she "hurts his family again".
After Otto murders the nurse, Tara is visited by Lee Toric, the nurse's brother and a former US Marshal, who questions her about her involvement in the nurse's death. As Tara's right hand begins to heal, she makes preparations to make Wendy Abel and Thomas' legal guardian, in case something happens to Tara and Jax, as Tara can't trust Gemma. Gemma threatens to link Tara to the cross and the nurse's murder if Tara leaves with the boys for Oregon. SAMCRO and Nero join together to destroy Nero's rival, Dante, and his crew, with help from the Mayans.
Jax sets a meeting with Pope and through a calculated plan has Tig secured in an abandoned garage. As Pope orders Tig tied up and prepares to execute him, Jax uses Clay's silenced pistol to kill Pope's henchmen. Jax then frees Tig and helps him take revenge on Pope, by allowing Tig to shoot Pope in the head and pinning the crime on Clay. Jax contacts Roosevelt, who knows about Clay's involvement in the home invasions, and has Clay easily arrested after Gemma gives a false statement against him. Jax then meets with August and has Clay framed again, so that August can place a bounty on Clay, who is seen sitting alongside black inmates.
Jax forgives Juice and grows closer to Tig, but his actions are too much for Bobby, who removes his Vice President patch and walks out. When Otto is about to give his statement, he severs his own tongue, destroying the RICO case and any link between Tara and the murder case. That night, Jax and Tara discuss Wendy's becoming a guardian for their sons. Although Jax initially refuses, Tara tries to convince Jax to come to Oregon with her, for fear that if they remain in Charming, they will become like Gemma and Clay. Roosevelt appears at their home, interrupting this discussion, and has Tara arrested for her involvement in the nurse's murder.

Production
Although Sons of Anarchy is set in Northern California's Central Valley, it is filmed primarily at Occidental Studios Stage 5A in North Hollywood. Main sets located there include the clubhouse, St. Thomas Hospital, and Jax's house. The production rooms at the studio used by the writing staff also double as the Charming police station. External scenes are often filmed nearby in Sun Valley and Tujunga.[3]
On his Sons of Anarchy YouTube channel Sutterinksoa, Kurt Sutter has stated that he began writing scripts for season 5, episodes one and two as early as March 1, 2012. It was also announced that Chuck Zito would be joining the Sons cast as a Nomad traveling through Charming.[4] Another announced cast addition for season five is Jimmy Smits. Smits, known for his work in L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, The West Wing and Dexter, will play an escort service owner and former Latino gang member who becomes a mentor to Jax.[5] Harold Perrineau joined the cast in May as the villain Damon Pope.[6]
With Dave Erickson's departure, Kurt Sutter remains the only writer to have been writing the series since the first season.
