The Somerville Fire Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services to the city of Somerville, Massachusetts.[4]

History

The Somerville Fire Department got its start in 1838, when Charlestown built a fire station at Washington and Prospect Streets, an area that today is property of Somerville. The station housed "Mystic No. 6" which was a simple hand tub.[1] A law was passed requiring every household to have two buckets hung in their front hallway. When a fire broke out, each man was to required to run with his buckets to the fire location and lineup with the others, forming a bucket brigade and passing water from a well or cistern to the men who operated hand tub.[1] In 1842, Somerville split from Charlestown to become a town of its own.

Operations

The SFD currently operates out of 5 Fire Stations, located throughout the city, under the command of a District Chief and a Deputy Chief per shift.[3]
