Production began on 19 November 2014. The film was released worldwide on 15 January 2016, coinciding with Sankranthi. Upon release the film received positive reviews.[1]

Plot

Dr. Ram Mohan (Nagarjuna Akkineni) is a nerdy Cardiologist practicing in the United States. His wife Seetha feels isolated as Ramu gives little attention to her due to his profession. Things worsen on Seetha's third brithday after their marriage and the duo decide to file a divorce. They leave for Sivapuram near Rajahmundry where Ramu's mother Satyabhama lives. Satyabhama is shocked to know that Ramu and Seetha are contemplating divorce and yells at a portrait of her deceased husband Bangarraju, an inveterate flirt who passed nearly 30 years ago in an accident.

Bangarraju's soul is in Naraka where he continues to flirt the females there. Yama, upon an order by Shiva, sends him back to the earth as a soul who can be seen and heard only by Satyabhama to solve the problems his family is facing currently. Bangarraju comes to know about the strained relationship between Ramu and Seetha and tries to unite them. After a few futile attempts, on Ramu's birthday, Bangarraju possesses Ramu's body. He manages to meet Ramu's young, female cousins and invites them to home.

On his way back, Bangarraju meets Suri, a drunkard who assumes him to be Ramu. To free himself from guilt, Suri reveals that he murdered Bangarraju by hitting him with a lorry after being bribed. Without revealing the details completely, Suri dies in an accident and Bangarraju comes to know that his family is in danger. Back at home, Ramu meets his cousins and spends some quality time with them, which leaves Seetha jealous and frustrated.

Bangarraju is later confronted by Satyabhama, who is unaware of the recent happenings. She asks him to advice how to unite Ramu and Seetha, and he suggests her to offer some tips to Seetha using which she can impress Ramu as plans made with the latter as the base failed. Upon Satyabhama's advice, Ramu and Seetha go to a theatre to watch a film. When a bunch of goons taunt her, Ramu (possessed by Bangarraju) fights with them, leaving Seetha pleasantly surprised as Ramu fails to attack the same group when they comment on Seetha earlier. The couple slowly get close to each other and Seetha realises that Ramu does love her.

On the other hand, with the help of a godman named Athmanandam, who can communicate with souls, Bangarraju comes to know that his uncle Rudraraju was the mastermind behind his murder. Further probing reveals that Raudraraju and his cousin wanted to steal the jewellery in a 1000-year old temple in their village dedicated to Shiva and to avoid complications, they murdered Bangarraju by bribing Suri as Bangarraju is an honest zamindar who developed the village using his ancestral wealth.

After Rudraraju's son dies due to a snake bite, a Malayali tantrik warns that only Bangarraju's descendants can open the lock and others who attempt to do so shall be killed by that divine snake. The tantrik captures Bangarraju's soul and gives a few threads to Rudraraju's grandson Sampath, instructing him to tie those to the hands of every member of Bangarraju's family which shall prevent his soul to communicate with them. After Sampath and others leave, the divine snake kills the tantrik and saves Bangarraju's soul.

Bangarraju reaches the temple where Satyabhama cannot hear him and Ramu cannot be possessed by him. Rudraraju and Sampath attack Ramu and Seetha after the jewellery is brought from the room. Rudraraju instructs his henchmen to place the couple in a car along with the jewellery so that the villagers assume them as thieves. In the process, the thread to Ramu's hand is removed and Bangarraju possesses him. He fights with all of them and leaves Ramu, who operates Seetha in a nearby hospital.

Satyabhama removes the thread and is able to see Bangarraju. Ramu and Seetha unite, and Yama orders Bangarraju to comeback as per Shiva's instruction. When Satyabhama requests Bangarraju to stay back, Yama gives him a chance to wipe her tears. Bangarraju asks her to keep smiling and live happily for his sake and goes back to Naraka.

Development

Post Manam (2014), Nagarjuna announced his next film in late August 2014 which would be directed by debutante Kalyan Krishna and produced by himself and Ram Mohan P under the banner of Annapurna Studios.[5] The film's title was confirmed as Soggade Chinni Nayana, a famous song from Aastiparulu (1966), starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao.[6]

Casting

Nagarjuna was announced to play a dual role in the film and Ramya Krishnan was selected as one of the female leads.[7] Nagarjuna revealed that the film will have a rustic backdrop and he would be seen sporting a proper panche kattu for one of the characters.[8] He reportedly wanted to cast Pranitha Subhash as the other female lead but things did not work out.[9] Sonal Chauhan was considered for the other female lead.[10] The makers had a change of mind and finalized Lavanya Tripathi as the second female lead.[11] It was known later that Nagarjuna will be seen as a father and a son in the film.[12]

Lavanya said that she would play a traditional Indian girl paired opposite the son character and added that her role in the film has a romantic touch.[13] Brahmanandam was confirmed as a part of the film's cast in mid December 2014.[14] Hamsa Nandini was selected for a crucial supporting role and was also confirmed to perform a special song along with Nagarjuna.[15] Anchor Anasuya was selected to play the role of Nagarjuna's cousin in the film and she was expected to join the film's sets in February 2015.[16] This role was initially offered to Swati Reddy who backed out citing lack of dates.[17]

Filming

The film was announced to be shot in and around Rajahmundry in late September 2014.[18] The film was formally launched on the morning on 19 November 2014 at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad.[19] Few hours after the launch, the film's principal photography began at a set in the same studio.[20] Few key scenes on Nagarjuna and Brahmanandam were shot at Ramoji Film City in mid December 2014.[14] After completing a couple of shooting schedules, a fresh one began on 11 February 2015.[21] Filming continued at Mysore from 10 March 2015 after completing most of the filming in Rajahmundry.[22] Few scenes were shot at a 1500-year-old Vishnu temple in Mysore.[23]

Critical reception

Soggade Chinni Nayana, released on the occasion of festival Sankranthi, opened to positive reviews and eventually emerged out as the biggest hit among the four Sankranthi releases, Nannaku Prematho (starring N.T.R), Dictator (starring Balakrishna) and Express Raja (starring Sharwanand). Critics lauded film's lead actor Akkineni Nagarjuna's performance in two contrasting roles and the work of debutante director Kalyan Krishna.

Idlebrain.com gave 3 out of 5 and wrote "Soggade Chinni Nayana is a family story with a fantasy element. Plus points are Nagarjuna’s terrific performance for two characters, Bangarraju’s entertainment and village backdrop. On the flipside, the screenplay should have been interesting. Bangarraju character, family orientation (though Bangarraju’s character is flirtatious) and sentiment might work in favor of Soggade Chinni Nayana. ".[24] The Hindu wrote "Nagarjuna is in top form and in the company of Ramya Krishna, sets the screen on fire. The two actors are like old flames and sparks fly when they come together. Soggade Chinni Nayana is set in a familiar, comfort zone and guarantees a lot of fun." and gave a bottom line as "A fun ride that capitalises on Nagarjuna’s charisma.".[25] 123telugu.com gave a rating of 3.5 out of 5 and wrote "Whenever Nagarjuna has done entertaining roles, films have always clicked. Same is the case with Soggade Chinni Nayana which is a complete family entertainer. Nagarajuna’s live wire performance and some very neatly executed family emotions are huge assets for this film. Barring the slow pace during the second half, this film ends up as an enjoyable watch for every section of the audience this Sankranthi season.".[26] greatandhra.com gave 3 out of 5 and wrote "At festival time, one expects to watch clean family entertainers. Nagarjuna has cleverly pitched this film at this time.Stories with 'aatma' angle is not new to Telugu audiences but the way it is narrated in an entertaining way in a family setup is what works in the film. A simple story but the packaging is done by new director Kalyan Krishna is very appealing. The first half is breezy and goes smoothly with simple narration. The second half turns a bit serious and also goes here and there in between but comes back on track before the penultimate sequences come in. Though the pace slackens in the second half, and the Yamalokam's graphics are patchy, the movie works because of Nagarjuna's performance and cool visuals.Drawbacks are pretty old story, and lack of touching moments. The tracks involving Nagarjuna with Hansa Nandini, Anasuya and Anushka are downright silly. All in all, the movie is perfect watch for Sankranthi festive time. Despite weak second half, it still entertains.".[27] indiaglitz gave 3.3 out of 5 and wrote "A well-written and well-executed film with splendid performances, especially by Nag and Ramya Krishna. A socio-fantasy, it will be remembered more for its rom-com strengths.".[28] cinejosh gave 3.25 out of 5 and wrote "In totality SCN had all those ingredients needed to become a clear Pongal winner. Families, female and youth audience might respect the film with awesome Box Office revenues. Commercially, SCN might have a long way to go till the new threats arrive in market. Cinejosh keeps SCN on top with 3.25 stars rating. Bangarraju, sorry Nagarjuna garu at his best…" and called it a "A Perfect Treat For Pongal, Don’t Miss.".[29]
