Soft grunge
Soft grunge is a fashion trend and a design style that originated on blogging web site Tumblr and is a form of 1990s appropriation. Soft grunge is a modernization of early 1990s grunge culture, that also incorporates elements of (contemporary subculture) and gothic subculture.[1][2][3][4]
History
Soft grunge originated on Tumblr around 2010.[5]
Fashion imagery
Some hallmarks of "soft grunge" include: the usage of studs, platform sneakers, spikes, floral patterns, flannel, Jeffrey Campbell shoes, and inverted crosses on clothing and blog background.[1][6] People who identify with the soft grunge movement often have pastel or ombré colored hair. What exactly defines something as being soft grunge is unclear, as anything from a still of Leonardo DiCaprio from the 1996 film "Romeo + Juliet" to a photo of Taylor Momsen with her hair photoshopped to a pastel color to just a plain picture of an inverted cross, can fall into the category of "soft grunge". 1990s fonts and tie dye images are also prevalent in the soft grunge community. The idolatry of actual 1990s grunge icons such as Nirvana, Kurt Cobain, Courtney Love, Hole, Winona Ryder, Drew Barrymore, Claire Danes, Jared Leto, The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Pearl Jam, PJ Harvey, and Soundgarden are commonplace in the soft grunge community.[1][5]
Pastel goth and pastel grunge are subgenres or variations of the soft grunge movement. Pastel grunge is soft grunge with an emphasis on pastel colors.[2] Someone who dresses in the Pastel Grunge style will dress more akin to the look of Baby Spice and the late 1990s. Pastel goth is a version of soft grunge with more of a bent towards the gothic aspects of the fashion, particularly the inverted cross.[7] Pastel goths often wear spiked garters and hair clips decorated with eyeballs or skeletal hands.[8][9]
