Smithson, Indiana

Smithson is an unincorporated community in White County, in the U.S. state of Indiana.^[1]

History

Smithson was originally called Wheeler, and under the latter name was laid out when the railroad was extended to that point.^[2] The present name is derived from Bernard G. Smith, a Civil War veteran and early settler.^[2] Smithson was the name of the local post office.^[2] The Smithson post office was established in 1880, and remained in operation until 1931.^[3]
