Smash the Control Machine is the fourth studio album from Otep. It was released on August 18, 2009. A deluxe edition was released with a bonus DVD as well. The pre-release package also contained a T-shirt featuring the album cover and a poster of the cover. The album sold 10,400 copies in its first week of release to debut at #47 on The Billboard 200 chart. It was produced by Ulrich Wild, who worked with bands such as White Zombie, Static-X, Bleeding Through, and Pantera. It is also the final album to feature long-time bassist Jason "eVil J" McGuire.

The title of track 4 in some editions is "Head of Medusa".
"Where the River Ends" ends at 7:57 followed by 4 minutes of silence leading to the hidden track.
Serv Asat is an anagram for 'Art Saves', like the title for their 2002 debut album, Sevas Tra.
The song "Rise, Rebel, Resist" also appears on the official soundtrack to the video game Saints Row: The Third, where it can be heard on the in game radio station, 106.66 The Blood.
