Nine months have passed. A mysterious woman named Pandora encounters the Headless Horseman and seals him away in her box, and is granted the power of a demon that causes fear in its victims before killing them in exchange. Ichabod reaches out to Abbie who is now an agent with the FBI when he is arrested and detained for smuggling a tablet from his travels into the country. When Abbie arrives to have him released, he shows her Katrina's pendant that is linked to Abraham's soul and tells her that something has happened to him, and that the second tribulation is about to begin. After catching up on lost time, Ichabod and Abbie are drawn into a murder investigation involving two men in a cabin who they learn were killed by a demon that paralyzed them with fear before killing them. Ichabod recounts his relationship with Betsy Ross to Abbie and Jenny when they learn about a message she once carried that can help them kill the demon. They learn that the demon is vulnerable when its eyes are whitened, and that it's attracted to gun powder. Meanwhile, Ichabod and Jenny lure the demon with gun powder while Abbie is on a raid, the plan goes badly and Abbie shoots the demon before it attacks Ichabod and watches as it turns to dust.
332"Whispers in the Dark"Russell FineM. Raven MetznerOctober 8, 2015 (2015-10-08)3AWL013.27[8]
A strange death in a shopping mall results in the discovery that an ancient demon has been released that hunts those who are keeping key secrets from others. During their confrontation with it, Abbie reveals that she has been monitoring her long-absent father- although she is undecided about what she will do with this discovery- and Crane reveals that General Howe offered him a chance to return to Britain if he exposed Washington's spies, Crane being briefly tempted by the offer. Learning that the demon was once a human being that is vulnerable when identified by its original name Marcus Collins, Crane is able to defeat it.
343"Blood and Fear"Kate DennisDamian KindlerOctober 15, 2015 (2015-10-15)3AWL032.97[9]
Pandora's next assault involves giving a man a knife that causes him to act on his darker impulses and murder those he hates. Witnessing one of the bodies, Ichabod recalls a similar case when he was a boy at Eton College in 1763, and realizes that the killer they are tracking was also Jack the Ripper. Research at the archive reveals that the Ripper's knife is the actual Ripper, as it drives its 'wielder' to kill. Researching the past killings, Ichabod and Abby realize that the killings are always stopped amid a wave of disease, realizing that the knife absorbs the blood of its victims and its wielder died when the knife killed someone with the disease. Although attempts to shoot the killer with malaria-tainted blood fail, Ichabod is able to defeat the killer by infecting himself with the disease, which he had already built up an immunity against. However, Pandora apparently takes Abby's moment of fear that Ichabod will die and use it to make a flower bloom on a mysterious tree.
354"The Sisters Mills"Guillermo NavarroHeather V. RegnierOctober 22, 2015 (2015-10-22)3AWL042.89[10]
Ichabod and Abbie investigate a case involving two sisters; the youngest had fallen into a mysterious coma, and the oldest tells them that she witnessed her sister being attacked by a monster. They learn that the creature responsible is called the Abyzou, which Ichabod likens to the Tooth Fairy when they discover that the demon targets children who are about to, or have lost a tooth and feeds on their soul. Ichabod remembers that Betsy Ross was in a similar situation with her niece, and had enlisted the help of Paul Revere, a local dentist who woke her niece by killing the demon. At the hospital, Pandora targets the sister and gives her the means to lure the creature, with the promise it will help save her younger sister. She then visits Abbie, who had been attacked by the creature earlier. That night, Ichabod saves the girl and shoots the Abyzou with a gun constructed from Paul Revere's tools and makes it visible with silver nitrate ammunition, and Jenny kills it by stabbing it. Abbie and the girl make a full recovery at the hospital, while another flower blooms on Pandora's tree.
365"Dead Men Tell No Tales"Russell FineSam Chalsen & Nelson GreavesOctober 29, 2015 (2015-10-29)3AWL054.57[11]
Following the events of the Bones episode "The Resurrection in the Remains:" When Pandora reanimates William Howe as an undead being while his remains are being sent to Sleepy Hollow from Washington and instructs Howe to reanimate his old soldiers as an undead army, Crane and Abbie learn that he can only be defeated by a secret hidden in his original tomb. Using fragments of Howe's skeleton, they call in a favor from Special Agent Seeley Booth and Doctor Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Bones) to analyze the fragments, discovering the tomb underneath the Capitol Building, originally designed for George Washington's use. Learning that the creatures are vulnerable to Greek fire - although Brennan dismisses it as an early form of napalm - they lure Howe's army underneath Sleepy Hollow and destroy them in the sewers with minimal collateral damage. Although aware of Pandora's role in Howe's resurrection, Ichabod and Abbie are unaware that another flower has bloomed on her tree.
376"This Red Lady from Caribee"Olatunde OsunsanmiShernold EdwardsNovember 5, 2015 (2015-11-05)3AWL063.04[12]
Pandora's latest summoning involves a creature that stings its targets and causes them to succumb to paranoia before the infection kills them, one of which attacks Agent Reynolds. Finding records of an encounter between Betsy Ross and the creature, Crane and Abbie are able to track the beast's lair and burn it down, but are taken by surprise when they discover Pandora's tree, which she enters as the sixth blossom blooms.
387"The Art of War"Hanelle CulpepperJoe WebbNovember 12, 2015 (2015-11-12)3AWL073.02[13]
Jenny realizes that she has actually absorbed the power of the Shard of Anubis, prompting Atticus to summon a trio of creatures to search for her and drain the power. While the creatures originate from Norse mythology, Crane realizes that they were summoned by invoking Pandora's name, which results in them being immune to their traditional weakness of mistletoe. Although Crane is inspired to use Jenny's blood to trick the creatures into attacking each other, Jenny falls under the Shard's influence, returning to Pandora's tree just as Pandora returns, accompanied by another man in a long robe.
398"Novus Ordo Seclorum"Russell FineLeigh Dana JacksonNovember 19, 2015 (2015-11-19)3AWL082.80[14]
Learning that Pandora's summoned ally is an ancient Sumerian god known only as 'the Hidden One', Crane recalls a tale in the books in the armory about the death of Paul Revere's nephew under similar circumstances. Realizing that the Shard of Anubis contained and hid the power that is now within Jenny, Crane is able to reforge the shard based on his memory of witnessing its original creation. When Nevins offers to talk to Abbie about where she might find Jenny, he is killed by Pandora, who offers Abbie and Crane a place in the new world that she and her 'husband' will create once they have 'cleansed' the current one. While Crane uses Nevins' book to distract Pandora by attempting to summon something from her Box, Abbie drains the Shard's power into the new shard, but, believing that it is the only way to save the world and her sister, she then takes the new Shard into the Hell portal under Pandora's tree. The resulting energy release apparently destroys Pandora's Box, leaving Abbie's fate unclear.

Production

Casting

On July 15, 2015 it was announced that Nikki Reed had joined the cast in a series regular role as Betsy Ross, an old flame of Ichabod.[24] Also joining the cast is Shannyn Sossamon who is set to play Pandora, a mysterious new presence in Sleepy Hollow who seeks the assistance of Ichabod and Abbie.[25] Jessica Camacho who plays the role of Sophia Foster, was also upgraded to series regular this season.[26]

It was also announced that Orlando Jones would not be reprising his role this season,[27] and that Neil Jackson would not be appearing as the Headless Horseman this season, due to the creative changes made to the show by the new showrunner.[28]

Filming

Production was moved from Wilmington, North Carolina when the state scrapped the tax credits incentive, to Atlanta, Georgia where it was reported that the show will receive 30% tax credits.[29]

Crossover with Bones

A crossover event with Bones aired on October 29, 2015. It consists of two parts, with characters from both shows appearing in both episodes.[30] The two episodes are linked by the use of the corpse of General William Howe, the British commander during the American Revolution; his skull is revealed to have essentially served as the murder weapon in Bones and he is reanimated by Pandora to serve as a weapon against Crane in Sleepy Hollow.
