The Singapore National Day Parade 2013, also known as NDP 2013, was a national parade and ceremony held on 9 August 2013 in Singapore in commemoration of Singapore's 48th year of independence. It was also the sixth and 2nd last time that the parade was held at The Float at Marina Bay.
Theme
“Many Stories… One Singapore” is the theme for NDP 2013. The theme gets Singaporeans to recall and share their stories as a realisation of their identity as a Singaporean as well to unite all Singaporeans to celebrate what makes them Singapore.[1]
Logo
The colourful and stylish logo of NDP 2013 represents the theme “Many Stories… One Singapore”. It comprises circles of different sizes and colours that symbolise various stories by Singaporeans that have created a collection of Singapore's memoirs. It also represents the encounters the nation have gone through together as a country as well as the morals and ambition that makes a Singaporean.
The logo also includes a red heart at the centre, a graphic symbol of love and passion for Singapore.[2]
Theme song
Titled as “One Singapore”, the NDP 2013 theme song was written with "Sing A Nation". It is composed by NDP 2013’s Music Director Elaine Chan and lyrics written by Creative Director Selena Tan.[3] Despite having an upbeat tempo, it has drawn with many negative reviews and criticism from the citizens of Singapore.[4][5]
"Sing A Nation"
A nationwide contest called "Sing A Nation" is organised to search vocal talents in Singapore, for the first time in NDP history. Ten singing groups will be chosen from the auditions that will eventually forms a 68-member choir called "Sing A Nation". Over four weeks, one group will emerge as the winner, the group in the NDP that will lead off the NDP Combined Choir. The nine remaining groups will join the choir, singing the theme song at the parade.[6][7]
NDP 2013 Funpack
The NDP 2013 Funpack is a simple and functional design that can be easily converted into a backpack from a sling bag. It is designed by a group of 10 students from Nanyang Polytechnic that incorporates with selected ideas submitted by some 200 students. The funpack features the Singapore lion-head logo and a "Since 1965" tagline in white paint. The sail-shaped funpack also includes a collapsible light stick that that can be extended to a 75 cm light sabre.[8]
Dynamic Defence Display
The Dynamic Defence Display (D3) will returned to the parade with new assets and personnel from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF). It will also include some 200 students from Yishun Primary School that participate in NDP 2013 in the attire of the various uniformed services as “future defenders” during the grand finale of the Dynamic Defence Display of military vehicles.[9]
