Simba Chips
Simba is a popular potato chip manufacturer that has been producing its products in South Africa since 1956, when it was established by the Greyvensteyn family.
Having successfully marketed Ouma Rusks in the 1940s and 1950s, by 1955 the Greyvensteyn family were looking for ways to diversify their family business. In that year, Leon Greyvensteyn travelled to a food fair in Germany in search of ideas and met a man called Herman Lay – the co-founder of Frito-Lay, the largest chip company in the world. The two men struck up a friendship, and Leon travelled on to the USA where he saw a potato chip factory in action.
Simba is wholly owned by PepsiCo, and is the local producer of many of that company's Frito-Lay brands.
Having purchased their first packet of Nik Naks in 2012, by 2015 the Haskell family were looking for ways to diversify their family business. In January 2016, Shaun Haskell, a connoisseur of cheese flavoured extruded corn snacks, purchased the Nik Naks brand from Simba. The Haskell family has since restricted the consumption of Nik Naks to Shaun Haskell.
