The first Siege of Bergen op Zoom were a series of three surprise attacks by the Duke of Parma lasting from September 23 until November 13, 1588. The Spanish army compromised almost 5,000 men. The short siege ended with the appearance of a Dutch army under Maurice of Nassau which cause the Spanish to flee. The Spanish lost 500 men to the garrison of Bergen op Zoom.
