Shiney Row is a village in Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear. Shiney Row enjoys good travel links with the rest of Sunderland. One of the City of Sunderland College's main centres was located in Shiney Row, however the college was retired in 2014 with plans to develop residential housing being pushed forward. In April 2015, this college was subject to a fire of unknown cause. One of the most notable people who was born in Shiney Row was Sir George Elliot, 1st Baronet, owner of the factory that produced the first Transatlantic telegraph cable.
The village is also located at the south eastern end of the Washington Highway (A182) - a dual carriageway that links the village with Washington and the A194. The A182 carries on as a road as far as Seaham on the East Durham Coast and links several ex-mining communities along its length.
The village has a few facilities, notably the recently refurbished library[2] and customer service centre and 2 doctors' surgeries: Grangewood Surgery and Westbourne Surgery. There are 4 Public Houses in Shiney Row - The Oddfellows Arms in Westbourne Terrace, The Shoulder of Mutton, The Wheatsheaf and the Travellers Rest located at nearby Mill Pit. There are also various other facilities including a community centre, churches, a post office, dry cleaner, various hairdressers, and other shops. Shiney Row college is also located in the area.
Its main primary school is Shiney Row Primary School which feeds into Kepier School. It is however close to Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary school which feeds into the St Roberts RC School. Barnwell School is also near Shiney Row Primary School. Barnwell School feeds into Biddick Academy.
