It is a regional high school covering the towns of Dudley and Charlton. The school is part of the Dudley-Charlton Regional School District. The principal is Mary A. Pierangeli. Shepherd Hill has over 1200 students.
History
Shepherd Hill was established in 1973. The school formerly included grades 7-12, but in 2000 Dudley and Charlton opened separate middle schools and the school is now restricted to grades 9-12.
Athletics
The school's football team is named "The Rams" and their colors are maroon, gold, and white.
Shepherd Hill belongs to the Mid Wach (A) league
The school sponsors many athletic teams, including boys and girls track, cross-country, cheerleading, soccer, tennis, basketball, baseball, softball, football, field hockey, wrestling, golf, and boys lacrosse. There are typically varsity and junior varsity teams for each sport and, on occasion, a team for only freshmen as well.
Other activities
Other activities include Environmental Committee, Show Choir, Band, Student Council, and Junior Booster Club. The school has a very distinguished music department which offers both co-curricular and extra curricular choral and band activities. There is also an active chapter of the National Honor Society and Tri-M music honor society at Shepherd Hill.
Music activities
Shepherd Hill features both vocal and instrumental ensembles. In regards to the vocal ensembles, Concert Choir, Show Choir, Chamber Singers, Women's Choir, and Madrigirls are available to students that wish to join.
For the Show Choirs, Shepherd Hill features an integrated boy/girl show choir named Fantasy, an all-girl show choir named Illusion, and an all-boy show choir named The Testostertones.
Concert Choir and Women's Choir are the only vocal ensembles that do not require an audition. All the Show Choirs, Chamber Singers, and Madrigirls require an audition process to join. Each vocal ensemble is currently run by director Connie Galli.[2]
The Show Choirs Fantasy, Testostertones, and Illusion are the most active vocal ensembles at Shepherd Hill. They compete at multiple events and against some of the top show choirs in the area during the academic year. They have also traveled all over the country to nationally-recognized competitions, including venues in Indiana, Florida, and New York City. The Show Choirs perform the same material throughout the entire year, however the other ensembles change their material in relationship to the season. For example, the concert choir will learn Christmas music during the months of November and December. At the end of each year, each choir performs at a final concert called "The Pop Concert". It is usually a farewell concert to the graduating class and features the seniors as solo performers during each of the songs. As of 2014, the music program will be hosting and performing a "Broadway Spectacular", featuring Broadway Musical themed songs and solo performers. This will he held in May. Regularly updated information about the choirs can be found here
Aside from the vocal ensembles, the instrumental ensembles include Jazz Band, Marching Band, Pit Band, Winter Guard, Winter Percussion, and Concert Percussion. Pit Band performs with the show choirs. Specifically, the pit band usually includes Piano I and II, Vibraphone, Guitar, Bass, and Drums. In 2007, the pit band featured Scott Ciprari from SJC Custom Drums.
The Jazz Band performs at multiple events throughout the school year. The Shepherd Hill Jazz Band usually features a large brass section including Alto and Tenor Saxophones, Trombone and Trumpet, with Electric Guitar, Upright Bass, and Drums.
Similar to the vocal ensembles, The Winter Percussion, Concert Percussion, Marching Band, and Winter Guard perform at various events during the year. The Marching Band usually also performs at half-time shows during football season at home games as well as many competitions and parades.
The Shepherd Hill Music department also offers Guitar and Piano beginner classes as well as a Music Theory class. The Music Theory class is particularly useful to students that wish to continue their education in music at a college or university after high school. In the Music Theory class, students learn how to identify intervals of notes, harmony, and modes.
Award
On 18 January 1999 the school was selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of ninety-six 'Outstanding American high schools' and the school was congratulated in the Senate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.[3]
