Shama Hyder (Urdu: شمع قبانی) (born 25 April 1985) is an Indian technology entrepreneur, a best-selling author, a public speaker, and a web and television personality. She is chief executive officer of the Marketing Zen Group, a full-service web marketing agency she founded in 2009.[1] and author of The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue which is among the top three selling web marketing books on Amazon.com.[2]

Biography

Shama Hyder was born Shama Kabani in Goa, India in 1985. When she was 9 years old, she and her family immigrated to the United States, settling in Carrollton, Texas. In 2003, she graduated from Carrollton's R. L. Turner High School, and then attended The University of Texas at Austin, graduating with a master’s degree in organizational communication in 2008.[3]

Career

Marketing Zen Group

As the founder and CEO of The Marketing Zen Group, Shama Hyder runs a web marketing firm with an emphasis on social media marketing based in Dallas, TX. In 2009, the firm was launched with $1,500 and has experienced annual growth at an average 400%. Shama directs the company’s 25 full-time virtual employees, delivering social media and digital public relations services for clients that range from publicly held Fortune 1000 companies to privately held small businesses and non-profit organisations. The company serves clients worldwide, including companies in Europe, Asia and Central and South Americas.[4]

Authorship

Hyder’s book The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue discusses a variety of social media tools, from Facebook to Twitter to LinkedIn, giving step by step instructions on how to use them, The first edition of the book received positive reviews when it came out in 2010. Public speaking

Hyder has presented keynotes and workshops internationally on social media, entrepreneurship, technology, and similar topics.[8]

In July 2011, she was part of the eleven member delegation of young American and Danish entrepreneurs who travelled to Cairo to share ideas with young Egyptian entrepreneurs on how to build a successful business. The trip was arranged by the Young Entrepreneur Council, in coordination with the United States State Department’s new Global Entrepreneurship Program, USAID, the governments of Denmark and Egypt, and several other entrepreneurship organizations. The visiting entrepreneurs conducted a week-long startup company boot camp.[9][10][11][12]

Media

Hyder is the author of a weekly business advice column, "Ask Shama" on Portfolio.com.[13] She is also a regular contributing writer to Forbes magazine.[14] She hosts Shama.TV, a web television show which covers new media technologies, trends, and marketing strategies.[15] She also hosts two weekly segments on the television station CW 33, KDAF-TV, in Dallas: Tech Zen with Shama, and Socially Sound with Shama.[16]

She has been featured on several magazines: Business Week,[17] Entrepreneur, Fast Company,[18] and Inc. Magazine,[19] and also in newspapers: the New York Times,[20] Wall Street Journal,[21] CBS News, Fox News, and MSNBC.[22]

She has been on the covers of Color Magazine,[23] SPAN Magazine, and Online Marketing Strategies Magazine.

Honors and awards

The Marketing Zen Group was listed on the Empact100 list of the top 100 companies in the US to be run by entrepreneurs under the age of 30.,[24] and Hyder was honoured as one of the Top 25 entrepreneurs who were under 25 years of age in North America by Business Week.[25] Business Insider named her one of the “20 Young Professionals to Watch in 2012.”.[26] Shama was listed on the prestigious Forbes 30 under 30 list in 2015 under the marketing and advertising category.[27]

She is a recipient of the Technology Titan – Emerging Company CEO award.[28] In 2011, she was named one of four “Super Sonic Youth” by Entrepreneur Magazine, which called her a “Zen master of marketing.”
