Severn School was founded in 1914 by Roland M. Teel[1] in Severna Park, Maryland, as a preparatory school for the United States Naval Academy. In 2013, Severn School merged with nearby Chesapeake Academy. Currently the school enrolls boys and girls from pre-Kindergarten through grade 12. Severn is the oldest private school in Anne Arundel County.
Athletics
The Severn Admirals compete in thirteen varsity sports: sailing, lacrosse, cross country running, football, wrestling, soccer, basketball, swimming, baseball, golf, tennis, field hockey, and track and field in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association. Severn has 35 varsity, junior varsity, and middle school teams.
The Severn sailing team won the 2007 Singlehanded Nationals, has been on the podium for the three last Double Handed Nationals, and placed second in the Team Racing Nationals in 2005. For the 2007–2008 school year, the Varsity Tennis team went undefeated and won the conference championships. The female section of the co-ed cross country team won championships during the 2008–2009 season.[2]
Severn has received praise for their nationally acclaimed sailing team, which held the title of the number one high school sailing team in the nation in 2008, coached that year by Thomas Sitzmann. Scott Steele, 1984 Olympic Silver Medalist in sailboarding, then coached the team until the 2014-2015 season when he was replaced by returning head coach Thomas Sitzmann.[1]
Clubs and Activities
Severn's chess team is nationally recognized and was previously coached by David Shin. Severn's mock trial team won the Maryland State Bar Association's Mock Trial Competition in April 2007.
Arts
Each year, there are three main theatrical shows at Severn: a drama in the fall, a musical in the winter, and a night of student-directed one-act plays in the spring. Various art classes are offered at Severn, including ceramics, sculpture, drawing, painting, design principles, digital video and photography.
Campus
There are 2 academic buildings at Severn, as well as the McCleary Student Center, Price Auditorium, Bauer Dining Hall, Powell Conference Room, ninth grade lockers and a few middle school classrooms.
Severn School's three buildings consist of the brand new New Teel Academic Center, replacing the Teel Academic Center. New Teel is mainly used for middle school classrooms, and some high school classrooms as well. McCleary Student Center is a building used for the Bauer Dining hall, as well as the band, middle school music, and middle school art. Price Auditoriom is also in the McCleary building.
Severn School has also finished the process of constructing the Edward St. John Athletic Center. The facility, opened April 2008, cost about $10 million. The school also recently completed its construction of two turf fields; one for field hockey and lacrosse, and one for football and soccer.[3]

- Distinguished alumni include three recipients of the Medal of Honor: RADM (then CDR) Herbert E. Schonland ('20), CAPT (then CDR) George L. Street III ('33) and RADM (then LCDR) Bruce McCandless ('28);[4]
- Slade Cutter ('30), four-time Navy Cross recipient and College Football Hall of Fame member [5]

- Joseph D. Stewart ('60), former United States Merchant Marine Academy superintendent
- Steve Bisciotti, Current Baltimore Ravens owner, attended Severn for two years in the 1970s.
- Robert Duvall, Actor and director
- Paul Brown, NFL coach was head football coach at Severn from 1930 to 1931
- Buzz Aldrin ('46), Apollo 11 astronaut, attended Severn in preparation for the entrance exams for the United States Military Academy.[6]
