The scuttling of the Peruvian fleet took place at the port of El Callao in January 1881. As Chileans troops entered Lima and El Callao that had been surrendered the Peruvian navyal officer Germán Astete ordered the whole Peruvian fleet to be scuttled to prevent capture by Chile.
