The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry (SNIY) is a new creation, created out of the restructuring of the Yeomanry Regiments. It is one of the Army's Reserve Light Cavalry Regiments (Lt Cav Regt) carrying out Combat Recce. The regiment has squadrons in Ayr, Belfast, Cupar and Edinburgh.
History
The Secretary of State for Defence announced that the name of the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry would change to "The Scottish and North Irish Yeomanry" and a new Headquarters (HQ) (Lothians and Border Horse) Squadron in Edinburgh. The new regiment was formed from the Regimental Headquarters (RHQ) of the Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry and three Squadrons of the Queen's Own Yeomanry.[1] Therefore, it consists of:[2]
- A (Ayrshire (Earl of Carrick's Own) Yeomanry) Squadron in Ayr[3]
- B (North Irish Horse) Squadron in Beflast and Coleraine[4]
- C (Fife and Forfar Yeomanry/Scottish Horse) Squadron in Cupar[5]
- E (Lothians and Border Yeomanry) Squadron in Edinburgh[6]
The Regiment is paired with The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in the Light Cavalry role under Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) 2020. They are primarily equipped with the Land Rover RWMIK reconnaissance vehicle.[7]
