Sattam Oru Iruttarai (English: The Law is a Dark Room) is a Tamil film directed by S. A. Chandrasekhar. The film casts Vijayakanth. After this film, Vijayakanth became one of the leading actors of Tamil cinema. The songs and score was composed by Shankar Ganesh.

Production
Chandrasekhar revealed that the script of the film was rejected by 20 producers.[1] Producer Chidambaram chosen Vijayakanth for the lead character after he was impressed by his performance in Neerottam. Selection of actor arose stiff opposition from some quarters protesting against giving the hero chance to Vijayakanth in the film. Despite these objections, the producer stood firm in his decision and made Vijayakanth the lead actor in the film.[2]
Soundtrack
The music was composed by Shankar - Ganesh. and Lyrics written by Gangai Amaran Poonguyilan and Gnani. The audio was released under the label Saregama.[3]

Remakes
- It was remade in Hindi in 1983 as Andha Kanoon, starring Rajinikanth, Hema Malini, Reena Roy and Amitabh Bachchan also acted in a cameo role.
- It was remade in Telugu in 1981 as Chattaniki Kallu Levu, starring Chiranjeevi, Madhavi and Lakshmi.
- It was remade in Malayalam as Maattuvin Chattangale, directed by Rajasekharan K S starring Ravikumar, Seema and Kamal Hasan also acted in a cameo role.
- It was remade in Kannada as Nyaya Ellide, (1982) starring Shankar Nag.
- It was remade by S.A.C.'s granddaughter Sneha Britto as Sattam Oru Iruttarai in 2012 starring Daran and Reema Sen.
All the remakes (except Andha Kanoon, Maattuvin Chattangale & Sattam Oru Iruttarai (2012 film)) were directed by S. A. Chandrasekhar.
Legacy
The film's success established Vijayakanth as a star in Tamil cinema.[2] The success also inspired similar themes about law system which were mostly directed by Chandrasekhar and his disciple Shankar.[4][5]
