Satish Gujral (born 25 December 1925) is an Indian painter, scultor, muralist, graphic designer, writer and architect of the post-independent era.[1] He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.[2][3][4]
Early life
Satish Gujral was born in Jhelum, Punjab, British India.[5] At the age of 8, a sickness resulted in impairment of hearing.
Education
In 1939 he joined Mayo School of Arts in Lahore (now in Pakistan) to study applied arts. In 1944 he moved to Bombay (since renamed Mumbai) and enrolled in Sir JJ School of Art. In 1947 due to a recurring sickness he was forced to drop out of school and leave Bombay.
In 1952 he got a scholarship Palacio to study at Nationale de Belles Artes, Mexico. There he had an opportunity to get an apprenticeship with renowned artists Diego Rivera and David Sequeiros.
Works
The partition of India[6] and the associated agony of the immigrants impacted a young Satish which manifested itself in the art works he created later. From 1952 to 1974 Gujral organised shows of his sculptures , paintings and graphics in many cities across the world such as New York, New Delhi, Montreal, Berlin and Tokyo among other cities.[7]
Satish Gujral was an architect also and his design of the Belgium Embassy in New Delhi was selected by the international Forum of architects as one of the finest buildings built in the 20th century.
In Popular culture
Dozens of documentaries have been made recording his work and a full feature film on his life is in the making. A 24 minute documentary called "A Brush with Life" was released on 15 February 2012 which was based on his own book with the same name. Four books of his work have been published including an autobiography.[8]
Personal life
Satish Gujral is married to Kiran and lives in New Delhi. His son Mohit Gujral, who is an architect is married to former model, Feroze Gujral. His elder daughter Alpana is a jewelery designer and Raseel is an interior designer.[9] His elder brother was former Indian prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral.
Awards
Satish Gujral was awarded India's second-highest civilian honor Padma Vibhushan in 1999. In April 2014, he was honored with NDTV Indian of the Year Award.[10]
