Sandy Lam

At the time of her debut album, Lam was not a serious singer in the Hong Kong music industry, but a DJ for Commercial Radio Hong Kong, a job she had held since 1982.

Conceptual Aspects

The production of the album, including art direction, cover design and recording, was handled by producer Fung Geng Fei. The success of other singers of the same generation, including Jacky Cheung, Priscilla Chan, and Leslie Cheung, encouraged Fung to create a public image for Sandy of a typical Japanese singing idol, with her physical appearance and music oriented to the popular Japanese style.

Commercial Aspects

Sandy Lam is the least successful of the artist's albums, barely reaching a Gold Disc Certification (Hong Kong IFPI standards). Track 1, I Don't Know About Love, was the main single that promoted this album and Sandy herself. Girlie Feelings, Summer's Umbrella, Beautiful Moment and Red Lips also received some airplay. This was uncommon, as such a weak-selling album rarely has so many songs that receive airplay. Sandy's debut album was a failure, both commercially (with extremely low album sales and poor reviews) and musically. Despite this, the album attracted a lot of attention from critics and reviewers.

Musical Aspects

Since the album was produced to create the image of a Japanese idol, its music was very Japanese-based. Eight of the ten tracks are covers of popular Japanese songs. The music was chiefly composed by Hong Kong singer Kwok Siu Lum, with lyrics by Calvin Poon. The lyrics are meant to reflect typical thoughts and expressions of a teenage girl. The music is done in the style of Akina Nakamori and Seiko Matsuda, making heavy use of guitar and drum machines to create rock-disco genre songs. Two of the songs (I Don't Know About Love and Red Lips) even covered Seiko Matsuda.
