San Pablo (canton)

San Pablo is the name of the ninth canton in the province of Heredia in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 7.53 km²,[1] and has a population of 22,038.[2] The capital city of the canton is also called San Pablo.

The canton is in the foothills southeast of the provincial capital city of Heredia, with the Río Bermúdez as the southeast boundary and the Río Pirro delineating the farthest portion of the northwestern border.

The canton of San Pablo is one of only two cantons in Costa Rica that is not subdivided into distritos (districts), and so canton administration also functions and provides the government services assigned to district level.

History

The canton was established by law on July 18, 1961.
