Sage Monroe Northcutt[7] (born March 1, 1996) is an American mixed martial artist currently fighting in the welterweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.[5]
Background
Northcutt began training martial arts at the age of 4[8] and competed all over the world from a young age. His father, Mark, is a black belt in karate, and his older sister, Colbey, is an amateur kickboxing champion.[9] Sage has won a total of 77 world championships in karate.[5] At the age of 9, Northcutt became the youngest person ever to be on the cover of Sport Karate Magazine.[10] He is also an undefeated kickboxer, with his record standing at 15–0.[11] Additionally, despite only being on the Seven Lakes High School varsity wrestling team for two months, Northcutt finished fifth in the state in his weight class (170 lbs).[11] Sage was inducted into the Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame in 2012.[6] He prides himself as being a wrestler and considers this his style alongside his kickboxing.
Mixed martial arts career
Early career
Northcutt began competing on the Legacy Fighting Championship amateur series, amassing an amateur record of 5-1 with his only loss to Charles Sheppard due to submission to strikes in the first round. At the age of 18, he turned pro and racked up a 5–0 record in four months.[12]
Ultimate Fighting Championship
Northcutt was featured in the debut episode of Dana White's Looking For A Fight.[13] After an impressive victory at Legacy Fighting Championship 44, he was signed to the UFC.[10] Northcutt is currently the youngest fighter on the UFC roster, and the third-youngest debutant.[5][14]
In his UFC debut, Northcutt faced Francisco Trevino on October 3, 2015 at UFC 192. He won via TKO in just 57 seconds, making it the fourth-fastest lightweight debut in UFC history.[15] It was revealed that Trevino failed his post-fight drug test after testing positive for elevated marijuana-induced THC-COOH levels.[16]
Northcutt faced Cody Pfister on December 10, 2015 at UFC Fight Night 80.[17][18] After losing the first round, Northcutt won the fight via submission in the second round.[19]
Northcutt was expected to fight Andrew Holbrook on January 30, 2016 at UFC on Fox 18,[20] his third fight in less than four months. Holbrook withdrew from the bout citing an injury eight days prior to the event and was replaced by Bryan Barberena.[21] With the late change and Barbarena on short notice, the matchup was changed to a welterweight bout.[22] Northcutt lost the bout via submission in the second round.[23]
Personal life
Northcutt is a petroleum engineering major at Texas A&M University[6]
In December 2015, a number of websites[24][25][26] ran a story on Northcutt's father, Mark Monroe Northcutt. In Fall 1989, Mark Northcutt was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Texas and later turned DEA informant, helping set up his lawyer in order to work off his own case.[27] Reports from 1990 also state that he was a 'known steroid dealer' in the area.[28] This led to speculation that Sage uses performance enhancing drugs.[29][30] Sage denied these claims.[31][32][33]
