SWU Maritime Regiment is the maritime academy of Southwestern University in Cebu City, Philippines. Said college is managed by Seacrest Maritime Foundation Inc.(SMFI), a non-profit organization, committed to help poor yet deserving youths by providing access to quality education and rewarding careers to break the cycle of poverty in the Philippines.
Known as The Maritime Regiment, it implements a regimental system of training. Guided by its core values: Discipline, Leadership, Honor - to prepare cadets for their future role as merchant marine officers in the global maritime industry.
Southwestern University, is a 65-year-old educational institution. It's Maritime College is a sister institution of PMMA – Philippine Merchant Marine Academy.
The program is an "E to E" (education to employment) platform. Successful graduates are guaranteed placement for international apprenticeship and subsequent employment through Seacrest Maritime Foundation Inc. (SMFI).
The SWU Maritime Regiment has a passing rate of 94% in the PRC licensure examination and was awarded by MSAP (Maritime Schools Association of the Philippines) for the consistent exemplary performance of its students in MSAP's annual qualifying examinations conducted nationwide.
History
In 2007, to respond to the current trends of the maritime industry, the Maritime College of Southwestern University was re-established as The Maritime Regiment, and championed by SMFI. The entire training program was re-engineered and geared towards quality education and a holistic approach towards training. In 2008, the college was recognized as a sister school of PMMA (Phil. Merchant Marine Academy) as its program gained recognition.
SMFI invested its own resources to strengthen the program and gained the support of Cardinal Ricardo Vidal, Archbishop of Cebu; and the support of various government units, from the local and national levels including: Hon. Jejomar Binay, Phil. Vice-President; Senator Miguel Zubiri, Philippine Senate; Hon. Rommel Jalosjos, Governor, Zamboanga Sibugay; Hon. George Hofer, Former Governor, Zamboanga Sibugay; Hon. Mike Rama, Mayor, Cebu City; Hon. Democrito Diamante, Mayor, Tuburan, Cebu; Hon. Celestino Martinez, Mayor, Bogo City, Cebu; Hon. Ricardo Ramirez, Mayor, Medellin, Cebu; Hon. MERCHANT MARINE OFFICERS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM:
Is a Holistic and Values-based Regimental Training, structured and supervised 24/7. The training is anchored on Core values of the Regiment: Leadership, Discipline, Honor; and is designed to build Character, Integrity and develop a High Sense of Purpose and Responsibility in every graduate utilizing an enhanced academic curriculum:3 yrs. (on campus) + 1 yr. Apprenticeship. The training imposes high standards of academic, physical and mental training.
SEACREST MARITIME FOUNDATION INC. (SMFI) is the champion agency managing the Maritime College of Southwestern University. It has re-engineered the program to what is now the SWU Maritime Regiment. Its mission: “To produce the most sought-after, globally competent graduates in maritime.”
SMFI has implemented the Study Now Pay Later (SNPL) program, through grants and sponsorship funds to fully implement its Roadmap. Its Education to Employment model guarantees job placements in international shipping companies for all its graduates. As of May 2012, SMFI is helping 800 Cadets from all over the Philippines pursue their dreams and ambitions of becoming Maritime Officers in the international maritime industry.
SMFI believes that education is the great equalizer in society. Those who are deserving yet financially unable to access quality maritime education, are able to do so through the Study Now Pay Later (SNPL) program. At present 98% of Maritime Regiment cadets are enrolled under the SNPL program. These bright and hardworking students come from the different provinces of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. With committed partners from different sectors of society, SMFI and its partners are able to lend a hand in nation building. It is the vision of SMFI to ultimately break the cycle of poverty and change the landscape of education in our Country. SMFI was founded by Andrew S. Aznar in 2007, in honor of his father, the late Engr. Matias “bombi” Aznar III.
