STV Glasgow is a local television station serving Glasgow and surrounding areas. The station is owned and operated by STV Group plc in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University.
The channel is available on Freeview, Virgin Media and Sky in Glasgow only, and is also available outside Glasgow through STV Player or by manually tuning a Sky receiver.[1]
History
STV were awarded local TV licences in January 2013 to operate two digital television channels, under the working titles of GTV and ETV, in Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively, for up to 12 years.[2] STV will work in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University and Edinburgh Napier University on the two channels.[3]
STV Glasgow launched at 18:30 on Monday 2 June 2014, originally airing every day from midday until around midnight.[4] Its sister station STV Edinburgh launched on 12 January 2015.
The channel extended its hours in March 2015, along with sister channel STV Edinburgh. The channels now began broadcasting at 7am on weekdays, starting with children's programming slot "Weans' World". On weekends, the channels begin at 7am with the rolling STV News text service - "Weans' World" airs from 9am.
Programming
STV Glasgow airs a locally focused schedule of new, archived and imported programming,[5] including a daily magazine show, an expanded STV News service, features, former STV programmes, documentaries and drama.
On weekdays, key programmes include The Riverside Show, a 60-minute topical magazine show airing at 19:00 each weeknight. STV News is broadcast throughout the day, beginning with a rolling news text service from midday. Hourly local updates are then broadcast from 15:00. STV News at Eight is broadcast across both STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh. A fully local STV News at Ten rounds up the days stories in the city, and usually features an extended interview with someone connected to one of the human interest stories that day. STV Glasgow also features simulcasts of the West edition of STV News at Six and Scotland Tonight.
Other bespoke programming for the channel includes Peter and Roughie's Football Show, shown weeknights at 18:30 (a replay of a radio phone-in broadcast on Central FM and Your Radio),[6] interview series My Life in Ten Pictures and entertainment shows including Grass Roots Music and The Blether.[7]
STV Glasgow also airs archived drama series including Taggart, Take the High Road and Rebus alongside the acclaimed Polish World War II drama Czas honoru (Days of Honour) and the comedy drama series High Times. The station has pledged to broadcast at least an hour a week of non-English language programming.
The Riverside Show
The Riverside Show is the flagship magazine programme on STV Glasgow, broadcasting live from STV's headquarters on the banks of the River Clyde. First broadcast on the channel's launch-night, the show originally aired from 18:30 until 20:30 every weeknight. Former "Miss Scotland" winner Jennifer Reoch and David Farrell, previously a radio DJ (known as DJ Romeo) present the show.[8] Colin Stone is the show's roving reporter.[9]
Since the show launched, its running time has been cut down to 90 minutes - then in March 2015, the slot was cut again to 60 minutes, now airing from 19.00 to 20.00.[10]
On weekdays, The Riverside Show is repeated throughout the day on both STV Glasgow and STV Edinburgh, as is the latter flagship magazine programme "The Fountainbridge Show". At the weekend, highlights from both programmes are shown as part of the "See What You Missed" and "Tea for a Tenner" strands.
