Sterling Bancorp was a bank holding company headquartered in New York.[4][5] The company provides a range of financial and banking services through the operation of its subsidiaries including Sterling National Bank, Sterling Banking Corporation and Sterling Bancorp Trust I, Sterling National Mortgage Company, Inc, Sterling Factors Corporation, Sterling Resource Funding Corp. and Sterling Real Estate Holding Company, Inc.[6] Sterling Bancorp is listed on the New York Stock Exchange as the symbol of STL.[1] As of December 31, 2012, the Company had $2.750 billion in total assets.[3]

History

In 1929, Sterling National Bank was organized and commenced business in New York City.[7]

In 1966 Sterling Bancorp was incorporated under the Bank Holding Company Act of 1956, as amended (the “BHCA”).[8]

During late 2011 and early 2012, SNMC, Sterling National Mortgage Company, Inc. (“SNMC”), Sterling Factors Corporation (“Factors”), Sterling Resource Funding Corp. (“Resource Funding”) merged into the bank to provide a unified service to customers and streamline organizational structure.[9]

On October 31, 2013, Sterling National Bank merged with Provident Bank.[10] The merged holding company is known as Sterling Bancorp, and it will trade on the New York Stock Exchange under "STL".[11]
