Sky Sport is a group of sports-oriented television channels operated by New Zealand's satellite pay-TV company, Sky Network Television. Sky Sport 1 was launched in 1990. A sister channel, Sky Sport 2 was launched in 1997, followed by a third channel, Sky Sport 3 in 2003. Sky Sport 4 launched in 2013.
Sky Sport 1
Sky Sport 1 is the original Sky Television sport channel in New Zealand on Sky channel 51. It was first introduced in 1990 as Sky Sport on the Sky UHF service.
It is New Zealand's premium all sport channel offers a full line-up of popular local and international sporting events, often live 24-hours-a-day, 7-days-a-week.
Sky Sport 1 features New Zealand's most popular sports, including rugby union. It shows live coverage of Super Rugby and ITM Cup, and has broadcast all of the All Blacks home and away games since 1996, after purchasing the rights from TVNZ. It bought the rights to New Zealand cricket matches in 1998, and currently all of New Zealand's international cricket matches are televised live, home and away, as well as coverage from Australia, England and India.
Association football is also very big in Sky Sport in New Zealand, it shows all Hyundai A-League matches as well as matches from the Premier League. Sky Sport 1 also shows all netball international matches, and it currently shows all ANZ Championship matches live and includes replays and a weekly show called On-Court. Sky Sport 1 also shows all of the New Zealand Breakers home games in the Australia's National Basketball League.
Also shown are the New Zealand National Basketball League, golf, tennis, hockey, and fishing.
Sky Sport 1 also produces its own shows including live interviews with sporting personalities, build-ups to major events and topical discussions from experts in their respective sporting fields. The seasonal shows include Friday Night Football, National Bank Cricket Company, Deaker on Sport, Vodafone NRL Full Time, Try Time, and Reunion.
Sky Sport 2
Sky Sport 2 is the second Sky Television sports channel in New Zealand, introduced in 1997 and is available on Sky channel 52.
Sky Sport 2 focuses on sports that do not feature prominently on Sky Sport 1. One of its staples is the English Premier League. It also shows almost all National Rugby League matches, with every New Zealand Warriors game live, and all live international rugby league matches involving New Zealand. It also shows both Super League matches live. A new rugby league show, 40/20 airs live on Sunday afternoons and features a round up of the round's matches as well as interviews with players, discussion amongst the panel and previews. The show first appeared in 2009 and is hosted by Steven Mcivor. It also screens repeats and delayed coverage of live events from Sky Sport 1.
Sky Sport 3
Sky Sport 3 is the third Sky Television sports channel in New Zealand, introduced in 2003 and is available on Sky channel 53.
The line up includes live coverage of events and replays of sports already screened on Sky Sport 1 or 2.
Sky Sport 4
Sky Sport 4 is the fourth Sky Television sports channel in New Zealand, introduced on April 29, 2013 and is available on Sky channel 54.
The line up includes live coverage of events as well as highlights and replays of sports screened on Sky Sport 1, 2 and 3.
Sky Sport 4 also carries sports news with Fox Sports News, Sky Sports News in the UK, and Prime's The Crowd Goes Wild.
Sky Sport Pop-up channels
More Sky Sport channels are launched in order to broadcast additional live sport. They launch at the start of the events and close shortly after.
