Jiul Petroșani (Romanian pronunciation: [ˈʒi.ul petroˈʃanʲ]) is a Romanian professional football club from Petroșani, Hunedoara County, founded in 1919.
History
The history of Jiul Petroșani goes back to 1919, when the club was founded as Clubul Atletic al Minerilor din Petroșani (Athletic Club of Petroșani Miners).
In 1925 Jiul was runners-up in the Liga I.
Most of its history it played in the Liga I and the Liga II. In played in the Liga I for 41 seasons, being ranked 14th in the all time table.
Jiul Petroșani won the Romania Cup in 1974 and was runner-up in 1972. In 1979, Jiul was a runner-up in the Balkans Cup.
Sponsored by the miners' union in the '90's, its chairman for a few years was Miron Cozma, the miners' union leader.
In the Liga I it played most recently in the 2006–07 season. After that it relegated all the way to the Liga IV. Mostly at fault for these disastrous results is its owner Alin Șimota, because of his refusal to sell the club to a more potent investor.
