The S5 and S55 are regional railway services of the S-Bahn Zürich on the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV), Zürich transportation network. The S5 is one of the network's services connecting the cantons of Zürich, St. Gallen and Schwyz, whilst the S55 is a short working of the S5.

Route

The core of service S5 links Zug and Pfäffikon SZ, on the south shore of Lake Zürich in the canton of Schwyz, running via Zürich Hauptbahnhof and Zürich Stadelhofen.[1]

At the northern end of the line, alternate trains link Oberglatt with either Niederweningen or Rafz. The S55 is a shuttle service that also links Oberglatt and Niederweningen, connecting at Oberglatt with the S5 trains that run to and from Rafz.[1]

The night service (SN5) on the S5 service, operating on weekends after midnight, runs between Bülach and Rapperswil.

On the Niederweningen branch of service S5, and on the S55 shuttle, the following stations are served:[1]

On the Rafz branch of the S5 service, the following stations are served:[1]

On the core S5 service, the following stations are served:[1]

Rolling stock

All services are operated by RABe 514 class units on weekdays, and RABe 511 units on weekends.

Scheduling

The core section of the S5 has a normal frequency of one train every 30 minutes. Alternate trains run to either Rafz and Niederweningen, thus providing an hourly through service on each of these branches. The trip takes 78 (via Niederweningen) or 84 minutes (via Rafz).[1]

The S55 has a normal frequency of one train every 60 minutes. This alternates with the Niederweningen branch of the S5 line, thus provide two trains per hour between Oberglatt and Niederweningen. The trip takes 16 minutes.[1]
