Ryo Fujii (born 7 August 1996) is a Japanese professional footballer who currently plays for LA Galaxy II of the United Soccer League.
Early life
Fujii was born in Hong Kong to Japanese parents. He moved to the United States and settled in Torrance, California at age 5.[1]
Career
Youth
Fujii began playing for local AYSO clubs in the Torrance area. He was a standout player for Torrance South High School, being named one of the top midfielders in the country by topdrawersoccer.com.[2] He was spotted playing for the Cosmos Academy West and was signed to the academy of Chivas USA of Major League Soccer in 2011. He remained with the academy until 2014 when the Chivas USA franchise folded. At that time, he transferred to the academy of the Los Angeles Galaxy, also of Major League Soccer.[3] During the 2013-2014 season, Fujii made 24 appearances for the U18 side, scoring 5 goals, as the team finished in first place in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-18 Division. In 2014, he also played college soccer for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos after gaining the attention of head coach Tom Von Steeg because of his accomplishments in the USSDA system.[2] During the college season, he made 19 appearances, tallying two assists.[4]
Professional
On 10 February 2015, it was announced that Fujii had signed for LA Galaxy II of the United Soccer League, the third tier of the United States soccer league system.[2] He was the first player to sign for the club under a new partnership with Cal State Dominguez Hills which provided financial resources for players to attend the college while playing professionally for the club.[1] During his first professional season, he made twelve appearances for the club while tallying one assist.[5]
